Vikings Drop 1-0 Match at Longwood

THE OPENING KICK
The Cleveland State women's soccer team returns to action with just one match this week when the Vikings host Longwood at Krenzler Field on Sunday (Sept. 16) at 1:00 p.m. CSU enters the week at 2-5 overall, having lost four straight contests, including a 2-1 setback at Ohio in its most recent match on Sunday (Sept. 9). Longwood is 4-2 this season and has won three of its last four contests, including a 1-0 win over UMBC on Sunday (Sept. 9). The Lancers host East Tennessee State on Friday. This will be just the second all-time meeting between the two schools with Longwood defeating CSU last season, 1-0.
REVIEWING THE LAST TIME OUT
CSU dropped two contests last week. Here are quick recaps of the matches.
Match #6: Akron 2, CSU 0 (Sept. 7, Cleveland, Ohio)
After a scoreless first half, Akron used two second half goals to claim a 2-0 win over CSU. It was the Vikings first home match since the season opener three weeks ago. Becca Coleman made four saves.
Match #7: Ohio 2, CSU 1 (Sept. 9, Athens, Ohio)
Ohio scored just nine minutes into the match, but a Vickie Havas goal off an assist by Jackie Kurgan tied the match at 1-1 two minutes later. The Bobcats would net the game-winner in the 62nd minute. Becca Coleman made five saves for the Vikings.
HAVAS LEADS TEAM IN POINTS
Freshman Vickie Havas has had quite a start to her collegiate career. The freshman forward from Stow scored her second goal of the season in Sunday's (Sept. 9) loss at Ohio and moved into first place on the team with seven points. She leads the team and is tied for the league lead with seven assists, while her seven points are tied for third in the Horizon League. Havas, who has started all seven matches, has at least one point in four matches this season.
TIP OF THE HAT TO AVONA
Senior midfielder Jaime Avona became just the second player in program history to record a hat trick when she scored three goals in a 5-1 win at IUPUI (Aug. 24). Avona joins Ashley Walchack, who accomplished the feat in a 6-1 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006. Avona now has seven goals in her career, tied for the sixth most in program history.
AND THE OTHER SENIOR CAPTAIN, TOO
Senior Valerie Stahl, a co-captain on this year's squad with Jaime Avona, added two goals of her own in the win at IUPUI (Aug. 24). The two tallies improved Stahl's career goal total to seven, tying her for seventh place on the all-time list at CSU.
STAHL KEEPS STARTING
Senior Valerie Stahl started both matches last weekend and has now started all 61 contests she has appeared in at CSU. Stahl, who has missed just two games in her career (one as a sophomore and one as a junior), is nine matches shy of becoming the 11th player in school history to play in 70 career matches. She is ranked ninth in program history with her 61 career starts.
ON THE BOARD FIRST
One area the Vikings will be working hard to change around is scoring first. In all seven games this year, CSU's opponent has put the first goal on the board, meaning the Vikings have had to battle from behind in all seven matches this year.
FIVE ALIVE
CSU's five goals in the 5-1 win at IUPUI (Aug. 24) were the second most goals scored in a match in program history. The record for goals scored in six, set in a 6-0 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006.
CAPTAINS OF THE VIKING SHIP
Seniors Jaime Avona and Valerie Stahl are serving as team captains. Both have been mainstays in the program for the last three years. Avona has played in 60 matches with 58 starts, scoring seven goals with two assists. Stahl has started all 61 matches in her career, totaling 15 points with seven goals and one assist, while anchoring CSU's defense.
VIKINGS TABBED FIFTH IN HORIZON LEAGUE POLL
Cleveland State has been picked to finish fifth in the 2012 Horizon League Preseason Poll that was released on Wednesday. Milwaukee, which received five first place votes, and Detroit, which garnered the other three, tied for first with 44 points. They were followed by Valparaiso (35 points), Wright State (34), CSU (24), Loyola (23), Green Bay (12) and Youngstown State (8).
UP NEXT
The Vikings open Horizon League play next weekend when they travel to Loyola for an 8:00 p.m. EST contest on Friday (Sept. 21). CSU then heads to Duquesne on Sunday (Sept. 23) for a 7:00 p.m. match.
