THE OPENING KICK
The Cleveland State women's soccer team hits the road for two key Horizon League road matches this week, starting with a 7:00 p.m. match at Youngstown State on Wednesday (Oct. 10). The Vikings then travel to Detroit for a 1:00 p.m. contest on Sunday (Oct. 14). CSU won both of its matches last week to improve to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in league play, good for three points. Youngstown State is 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the Horizon League, while the Titans begin the week at 5-6-1 overall and tied for first place in the league with six points at 2-2. Valparaiso and Milwaukee also have six points.
REVIEWING THE LAST TIME OUT
CSU was in action two times last week. Here are recaps of the matches.
Match #12: CSU 1, Green Bay 0 (2OT) (Oct. 3, Cleveland, Ohio)
Jamie Avona scored off a corner kick from Vickie Havas in the second minute of double overtime to give the Vikings a key three points in a 1-0 victory. Sarah Wood made six saves to earn CSU's first shutout of the season.
Match #13: CSU 4, Francis Marion 1 (Oct. 6, Cleveland, Ohio)
CSU gave up a goal just two minutes in, but rallied with three first half goals in a 4-1 win over Francis Marion. Jaime Avona scored a goal and added an assist, while Shea Levi, Kelcey Fischer and Brittany Koester added goals.
AVONA'S BIG WEEK
Senior Jaime Avona enjoyed quite a week in helping CSU to a pair of wins. Avona scored a pair of game-winning goals and added an assist. She started the week by scoring the golden goal in the second minute of double overtime in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Green Bay. Avona came back with a goal and an assist on Senior Day in Saturday's 4-1 win over Francis Marion. Avona's two goals allowed her to move into a tie for second in the league with five goals.
HAVAS KEEPS SCORING POINTS
Freshman Vickie Havas has had quite a start to her collegiate career. Havas recorded her league-leading fifth assist of the season in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Green Bay, while also increased her Horizon League leading point total to 15. Havas has scored at least one point in eight of the 12 matches she has played in this year (sat out Francis Marion match).
LOOKING AT THE RECORD BOOK
Through 13 matches, freshman Vickie Havas is making a dent in the CSU single season record book. Havas' 15 points are tied for the fifth most in a season in program history, and just four shy of moving all the way up to second place with 19 points (Jennifer Wieand, 2007). Havas' five assists are tied for the third most in a season in school history, while her five goals are tied for the fifth most in a season at CSU.
AVONA IMPROVES CAREER MARKS
With her two goals and assist in last week's two wins, senior Jaime Avona moved up the career record book. Avona now has nine career goals, ranking fourth all-time in program history, while her four assists are 10th most. Her 22 career points are fifth most in CSU history.
VIKINGS NOTCH FIRST SHUTOUT
CSU recorded its first shutout of the season in Wednesday's 1-0 double overtime victory over Green Bay. Sarah Wood posted six saves to earn the shutout, which was also aided by the solid defense of Valerie Stahl, Frederike Dubeau, Carla Ragone, Sarah Zawie and Erin O'Toole.
WOOD NOTCHES FIRST CAREER POINT
Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Wood notched her first career point with an assist on CSU's goal against Valparaiso (Sept. 28). Wood scooped up a loose ball in front of the goal, made a quick throw to Jaime Avona who kicked it up field to Vickie Havas. Havas made a move past the goalkeeper and scored.
TIP OF THE HAT TO AVONA
Senior midfielder Jaime Avona became just the second player in program history to record a hat trick when she scored three goals in a 5-1 win at IUPUI (Aug. 24). Avona joins Ashley Walchack, who accomplished the feat in a 6-1 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006. Avona now has nine goals in her career, the fourth most in program history.
STAHL KEEPS STARTING
Senior Valerie Stahl started both of CSU's matches last week and has now started all 67 contests she has appeared in at CSU. Stahl, who has missed just two games in her career (one as a sophomore and one as a junior), is four matches shy of becoming the 11th player in school history to play in 70 career matches. She is ranked ninth in program history with her 67 career starts.
FIVE ALIVE
CSU's five goals in the 5-1 win at IUPUI (Aug. 24) were the second most goals scored in a match in program history. The record for goals scored in six, set in a 6-0 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006.
UP NEXT
The Vikings return home to host Wright State on Saturday (Oct. 20) at 4:00 p.m. in the regular season home finale at Krenzler Field. CSU then concludes the regular season with an 8:00 p.m. EST contest at Milwaukee on Friday (Oct. 26).
