CLEVELAND, Ohio - Kent State used a goal in each half to claim a 2-0 victory over Cleveland State in the 2012 season opener for both squads on Friday night at Krenzler Field.

The Vikings controlled play for the first 10-12 minutes of the opening half, controlling the ball and playing a majority of the time in Kent's half of the field.

However, an own goal at the 19:24 mark provided the Golden Flashes with a 1-0 lead.

Kent's Hannah Newhouse started the play with a free kick from just over midfield. The ball sailed into the CSU box where a Viking defender tried to head it out, but mistimed her jump, sending the ball backwards into the net past goalkeeper Sarah Wood's outstretched arm.

The Golden Flashes added their second goal just five minutes into the second half when Jessacca Gironda scored off a cross from Stephanie Haugh. Jaclyn Dutton was also credited with an assist after starting the play and feeding the ball to Haugh who took it into the left corner before her cross into the box.

It would be all Kent State would need as its defense held the Vikings to just seven shots, but none of which came on goal. Both teams attempted three corner kicks in the chippy contest in which there were four yellow cards and 40 combined fouls.

Wood made two saves in goal for the Vikings.
