CHARLESTON, Ill. - Eastern Illinois used a goal just over three minutes into overtime to claim a 3-2 victory over Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon.

The loss drops CSU to 2-2 this season, while EIU improves to 1-4.

"The positive is that we are figuring out how to score goals, but we are also giving up way to many and have to figure out a way to fix that," head coach Derrek Falor said. "We came out flat today and were far from our best and are frustrated as a group after today.

"We have to do a better job of recognizing the challenges we face from that first whistle and today was trying to make the transition of playing on a slower grass field. I thought we gifted them the first 45 minutes with the way we played, not taking care of the ball, our one-on-one defense and those are issues we shouldn't be having right now. I was happy with the way we were able to correct some things in the second half."

EIU got on the board first in the 31st minute, scoring on a penalty kick by Kristin Germann.

It stayed that way through halftime before the Vikings knotted the contest at 1-1 on Kelcey Fischer's first goal of the season when she blasted a shot from 25 yards out at the 53:47 mark.

Twenty minutes later, CSU took a 2-1 lead when Vickie Havas tallied her first goal of the campaign. Havas, who already has three assists this year, beat an EIU defender inside the box before getting her shot past the goalkeeper from three yards out.

The lead didn't last long as Germann netted her second goal of the afternoon just 29 seconds later to tie the match at 2-2. Neither team could muster the game-winning goal, sending the match into overtime.

It would be CSU's second overtime contest in the last week after winning in extra time at Bowling Green last Sunday, 2-1. However, this time, it was EIU coming up with the game-winning goal as Germann finished off a hat trick 3:04 into the extra session when she knocked in a rebound after an initial shot and save.

Sarah Wood played the first half in goal for CSU, making four saves, while Becca Coleman played the rest of the match and made one save. EIU outshot the Vikings, 21-15, and held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Vikings are now out of action for a week until they play at Canisius next Sunday (Sept. 2) at 4:00 p.m.
