THE OPENING KICK
The Cleveland State women's soccer team returns home for the first time since the season opener three weeks ago when the Vikings host Akron at 7:00 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 7). It will be the first of two matches for CSU this weekend as they also head to Ohio for a 1:00 p.m. contest on Sunday (Sept. 9). The Vikings enter the week at 2-3 overall, having dropped two straight matches, including a 3-0 setback at Canisius on Sunday (Sept. 2) in CSU's lone match last week.
REVIEWING THE LAST TIME OUT
CSU played just one time last week. Here is a recap of that match.
Match #5: Canisius 3, CSU 0 (Sept. 2, Buffalo, N.Y.)
Despite out-shooting Canisius, 19-12, the Vikings came out on the short end of a 3-0 defeat to the Golden Griffs. Canisius took a 1-0 lead into halftime and added two late second half goals for the win.
TIP OF THE HAT TO AVONA
Senior midfielder Jaime Avona became just the second player in program history to record a hat trick when she scored three goals in a 5-1 win at IUPUI (Aug. 24). Avona joins Ashley Walchack, who accomplished the feat in a 6-1 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006. Avona now has seven goals in her career, tied for the sixth most in program history.
AND THE OTHER SENIOR CAPTAIN, TOO
Senior Valerie Stahl, a co-captain on this year's squad with Jaime Avona, added two goals of her own in the win at IUPUI (Aug. 24). The two tallies improved Stahl's career goal total to seven, tying her for seventh place on the all-time list at CSU.
STAHL KEEPS STARTING
Senior Valerie Stahl started the lone match last weekend and has now started all 59 contests she has appeared in at CSU. Stahl, who has missed just two games in her career (one as a sophomore and one as a junior), is 11 matches shy of becoming the 10th player in school history to play in 70 career matches. She is also just one starts shy of moving into a tie for ninth place on the all-time list at CSU with 60 career starts.
WELCOME HOME
CSU will be playing at home for the first time since the season opener against Kent State on Aug. 17, a span of 21 days. That is tied for the longest stretch between home games in program history. The last time it occured was in 2007 when CSU hosted Green Bay on Sept. 30, played four straight road matches, then hosted Valparaiso on Oct. 21.
ON THE BOARD FIRST
One area the Vikings will be working hard to change around is scoring first. In all five games this year, CSU's opponent has put the first goal on the board, meaning the Vikings have had to battle from behind in all five matches this year.
FIVE ALIVE
CSU's five goals in the 5-1 win at IUPUI (Aug. 24) were the second most goals scored in a match in program history. The record for goals scored in six, set in a 6-0 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006.
HAVAS ADDS GOAL TO HER ASSISTS
Freshman Vickie Havas has had quite a start to her career, ranking second on the team with five points with one goal and three assists. Havas' three assists are tied for first in the Horizon League and are also tied for the seventh most in a season in program history. She needs one more to move into a tie for fifth place on the list.
ON THE OFFENSIVE
The Vikings have been on an offensive tear through the first three weeks of the season, leading the Horizon League in goals (9) and ranking second in points (24) and third in assists (6).
DUBEAU NETS PRESEASON GOAL
Junior Frederike Dubeau netted Cleveland State's lone goal in three preseason exhibition matches, scoring in the 1-1 tie with Oakland (Aug. 9). Dubeau's goal came in the eighth minute when she headed in a corner kick from Carla Ragone.
CAPTAINS OF THE VIKING SHIP
Seniors Jaime Avona and Valerie Stahl are serving as team captains. Both have been mainstays in the program for the last three years. Avona has played in 58 matches with 56 starts, scoring seven goals with two assists. Stahl has started all 59 matches in her career, totaling 15 points with seven goals and one assist, while anchoring CSU's defense.
ALL-OHIO
CSU's freshman class comes in as one of the most talented in program history, featuring four players who were All-Ohio selections as seniors in high school. Jen Jankowski, Erin O'Toole and Allie Sieradzki were first team picks, while Chloe Fadenholzwas a second team honoree.
UP NEXT
The Vikings return home to host Longwood on Sunday (Sept. 16) at 1:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field in the lone match next week.
