THE OPENING KICK
The Cleveland State women's soccer team concludes its four match road trip when the Vikings travel to Canisius on Sunday (Sept. 2) for a 4:00 p.m. contest in CSU's lone match of the week. The Vikings enter the contest with a 2-2 record after splitting a pair of matches on the road last weekend, defeating IUPUI, 5-1, before falling in overtime at Eastern Illinois, 3-2. Canisius is 0-3 this season, having been outscored 8-0 in the three matches, and will host Youngstown State on Friday before the Vikings come to to town. CSU is 1-3 all-time against Canisius, defeating the Griffs, 3-1, in 2010.
REVIEWING THE LAST TIME OUT
CSU played two road contests last weekend. Here are brief recaps:
Match #3: CSU 5, IUPUI 1 (Aug. 24, Indianapolis, Ind.)
Jaime Avona recorded just the second hat trick in program history and Valerie Stahl added the other two goals in a 5-1 win at IUPUI. The five goals were the second most in a match in program history. Stahl, Taylor Vidovic, Vickie Havas and Lynsay Strahorn had assists.
Match #4: Eastern Illinois 3, CSU 2 (OT) (Aug. 26, Charleston, Ill.)
Eastern Illinois' Kristin Germann scored her third goal of the match just three minutes into overtime for a 3-2 win over the Vikings.Kelcey Fischer and Vickie Havas scored for CSU, while Chloe Fadenholz assisted on Fischer's goal.
TIP OF THE HAT TO AVONA
Senior midfielder Jaime Avona became just the second player in program history to record a hat trick when she scored three goals in Friday's (Aug. 24) 5-1 win at IUPUI. Avona joins Ashley Walchack, who accomplished the feat in a 6-1 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006. Avona now has seven goals in her career, tied for the sixth most in program history.
AND THE OTHER SENIOR CAPTAIN, TOO
Senior Valerie Stahl, a co-captain on this year's squad with Jaime Avona, added two goals of her own in Friday's (Aug. 24) win at IUPUI. The two tallies improved Stahl's career goal total to seven, tying her for seventh place on the all-time list at CSU.
STAHL KEEPS STARTING
Senior Valerie Stahl started both matches last weekend and has now started all 58 contests she has appeared in at CSU. Stahl, who has missed just two games in her career (one as a sophomore and one as a junior), is 12 matches shy of becoming the 10th player in school history to play in 70 career matches. She is also just two starts shy of moving into a tie for ninth place on the all-time list at CSU with 60 career starts.
FIVE ALIVE
CSU's five goals in Friday's (Aug. 24) 5-1 win at IUPUI were the second most goals scored in a match in program history. The record for goals scored in six, set in a 6-0 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006.
HAVAS ADDS GOAL TO HER ASSISTS
Freshman Vickie Havas has had quite a start to her career, ranking second on the team with five points on one goal and three assists. Havas' three assists are tops in the Horizon League and are also tied for the seventh most in a season in program history. She needs one more to move into a tie for fifth place on the list.
ON THE OFFENSIVE
The Vikings have been on an offensive tear through the first two weeks of the season, leading the Horizon League in goals (9) and points (24) and ranking second with six assists.
DUBEAU NETS PRESEASON GOAL
Junior Frederike Dubeau netted Cleveland State's lone goal in three preseason exhibition matches, scoring in the 1-1 tie with Oakland (Aug. 9). Dubeau's goal came in the eighth minute when she headed in a corner kick from Carla Ragone.
CAPTAINS OF THE VIKING SHIP
Seniors Jaime Avona and Valerie Stahl will serve as team captains. Both players have been mainstays in the program for the last three years. Avona has played in 57 matches with 55 starts, scoring seven goals with two assists. Stahl has started all 58 matches in her career, totaling 15 points with seven goals and one assist, while anchoring CSU's defense.
ALL-OHIO
CSU's freshman class comes in as one of the most talented classes in program history, featuring four players who were All-Ohio selections as seniors in high school. Jen Jankowski, Erin O'Toole and Allie Sieradzki were first team picks, while Chloe Fadenholz was a second team honoree.
UP NEXT
The Vikings return home to host Akron on Friday (Sept. 7) at 7:00 p.m. and travel to Ohio for a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday (Sept. 9).
