THE OPENING KICK
Cleveland State continues its early season schedule when the Vikings play two road matches this weekend, beginning with a 5:30 p.m. contest at IUPUI on Friday (Aug. 24). CSU then heads to Eastern Illinois for a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday (Aug. 26). The Vikings opened the 2012 season with a pair of games last weekend, falling at home to Kent State, 2-0, and winning at Bowling Green in overtime, 2-1. IUPUI and EIU both enter the week at 0-2.
REVIEWING THE LAST TIME OUT
CSU opened the regular season with two games last weekend. Here are brief recaps:
Match #1: Kent State 2, CSU 0 (Aug. 17, Cleveland, Ohio)
Kent State used a first half own goal by CSU and added a tally just five minutes into the second half for a 2-0 win over the Vikings. CSU did have seven shots, but none were on goal. Sarah Wood made two saves.
Match #2: CSU 2, Bowling Green 1 (OT) (Aug. 19, Bowling Green, Ohio)
Allie Sieradzki scored six minutes into the first overtime session to lift the Vikings to a 2-1 win at Bowling Green. The Falcons scored eight minutes before halftime to take a 1-0 lead, but CSU tied it at 1-1 on a Chloe Fadenholz goal off a Vickie Havas assist in the 68th minute. Havas also had the assist on the game-winning goal.
STAHL KEEPS STARTING
Senior Valerie Stahl started both matches last weekend and has now started all 56 contests she has appeared in at CSU. Stahl, who has missed just two games in her career (one as a sophomore and one as a junior), is 14 matches shy of becoming the 10th player in school history to play in 70 career matches. She is also just four starts shy of moving into a tie for ninth place on the all-time list at CSU with 60 career starts.
VIKINGS TABBED FIFTH IN HORIZON LEAGUE POLL
Cleveland State has been picked to finish fifth in the 2012 Horizon League Preseason Poll that was released on Wednesday. Milwaukee, which received five first place votes, and Detroit, which garnered the other three, tied for first with 44 points. They were followed by Valparaiso (35 points), Wright State (34), CSU (24), Loyola (23), Green Bay (12) and Youngstown State (8).
HAVAS DISHES IT OUT
Freshman Vickie Havas had quite a debut for the Vikings over the weekend, tallying the assist on both goals in the win at Bowling Green (Aug. 19). She was one of just two players in the Horizon League to record two assists on the opening weekend of the regular season (Kelly Lewers, Milwaukee).
THE FRESHMAN HAVE IT
The Vikings totaled six points in their first two matches of the season, all coming in a 2-1 overtime win at Bowling Green (Aug. 19). Even more impressive was all six points came from freshman with Allie Sieradzki and Chloe Fadenholz scoring the goals andVickie Havas notching the assist on each tally.
COLEMAN IN THE NET
Freshman Becca Coleman received her first collegiate action in a regular season match when she was inserted in the goal for the second half at Bowling Green (Aug. 19). She played the entire half and overtime, totaling 51 minutes and making two saves.
WORKING OVERTIME FOR A WIN
CSU's 2-1 overtime win at Bowling Green (Aug. 19) improved the Vikings streak of not losing an overtime match to seven straight. Since falling, 3-2, in extra time at IUPUI on Sept. 25, 2009, the Vikings have gone 2-0-5 in overtime contests.
DUBEAU NETS PRESEASON GOAL
Junior Frederike Dubeau netted Cleveland State's lone goal in three preseason exhibition matches, scoring in the 1-1 tie with Oakland (Aug. 9). Dubeau's goal came in the eighth minute when she headed in a corner kick from Carla Ragone.
CAPTAINS OF THE VIKING SHIP
Seniors Jaime Avona and Valerie Stahl will serve as team captains. Both players have been mainstays in the program for the last three years. Avona has played in 55 matches with 53 starts, scoring four goals with two assists. Stahl has started all 56 matches in her career, totaling 11 points with five goals and one assist, while anchoring CSU's defense.
ALL-OHIO
CSU's freshman class comes in as one of the most talented classes in program history, featuring four players who were All-Ohio selections as seniors in high school. Jen Jankowski, Erin O'Toole and Allie Sieradzki were first team picks, while Chloe Fadenholz was a second team honoree.
UP NEXT
The Vikings return to action on Sunday (Sept. 2) when CSU heads to Canisius for a 4:00 p.m. contest before returning home to host Akron at 7:00 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 7).
