CHICAGO, Ill. - Loyola scored two minutes into the game and held off Cleveland State for a 1-0 victory over the Vikings in the Horizon League opener for both teams on Friday night.

CSU fell to 3-6 this season and 0-1 in the Horizon League, while the Ramblers improved to 5-4 overall (1-0 HL).

"Tonight was really a tale of two halves," head coach Derrek Falor said. "We came out very passive in the first half with very little energy. We were able to respond in the second half and create some chances and opportunities, but could not put anything on frame.

"We didn't do what we had to do, but give credit to Loyola. They are very direct in what they do and didn't stray from it tonight and were able to get a result."

Loyola wasted little time in getting on the board, using a goal by Brielle Haupt just 2:14 into the contest for a quick 1-0 lead. Tricia Stonebraker recorded the assist on the goal.

"It was a very scrappy goal on their part," Falor said. "There was a little scrum in front of the goal and they beat us to the ball, got a foot on it and knocked it in."

It stayed 1-0 the rest of the first half as CSU was limited to just one shot, a Taylor Miller shot on goal late in the half.

The Vikings were much more aggressive in the second half, out-shooting the Ramblers, 9-1, over the final 45 minutes. However, CSU could not muster the tying goal with several shots just over the crossbar and one hitting the outside of the post.

Both teams finished with 10 shots, while Loyola won seven corner kicks to zero for CSU.

Monica Ganyo made five saves to earn the shutout for the Ramblers, while Sarah Wood had three saves for the Vikings.

The Vikings are back in action on Sunday (Sept. 23) when CSU heads to Duquesne for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
