THE OPENING KICK
The Cleveland State women's soccer team opens Horizon League play when the Vikings travel to Loyola for an 8:00 p.m. contest on Friday (Sept. 21). CSU then heads to Duquesne for a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday (Sept. 23). The Vikings enter the week at 3-5 after snapping a four-match losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Longwood on Sunday (Sept. 16).

REVIEWING THE LAST TIME OUT
CSU won its lone match last week. Here is a quick recap of the match.

Match #8: CSU 3, Longwood 1 (Sept. 16, Cleveland, Ohio)
Vickie Havas had a goal and an assist to lead Cleveland State to a 3-1 win over Longwood. Erin O'Toole and Chloe Fadenholz added goals, whileSarah Wood made two saves.

HAVAS NAMED HORIZON LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Freshman Vickie Havas was named the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Vikings to a 3-1 win over Longwood with a goal and an assist. Havas assisted on CSU's first goal with a corner kick that was knocked in by Erin O'Toole. Havas then added the third goal of the match with less than 10 minutes left that sealed the win. She is the second CSU player to earn the award this year, joining senior Jaime Avona (Aug. 27).

QUITE A START FOR HAVAS
Freshman Vickie Havas has had quite a start to her collegiate career. The freshman forward from Stow tallied a goal and an assist in Sunday's (Sept. 16) win over Longwood and has now notched at least one point in five of CSU's eight matches this year. Havas is tied for the Horizon League lead in points (10), leads the league with four assists and is tied for second with three goals.

TIP OF THE HAT TO AVONA
Senior midfielder Jaime Avona became just the second player in program history to record a hat trick when she scored three goals in a 5-1 win at IUPUI (Aug. 24). Avona joins Ashley Walchack, who accomplished the feat in a 6-1 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006. Avona now has seven goals in her career, tied for the sixth most in program history.

A LOOK AT THE RECORD BOOK
Freshman Vickie Havas is quickly creeping up the CSU record book. Havas' 10 points are already tied for the ninth most in a season in program history, while her four assists are tied for the fourth most in a season at CSU.

ON THE BOARD FIRST
When Erin O'Toole knocked in a corner kick from Vickie Havas on Sunday against Longwood to give CSU an early 1-0 lead, it marked the first time this season that the Vikings scored the first goal of a match.

LEAGUE OPENERS
Friday's match at Loyola will be the ninth Horizon League opener for the Vikings with CSU claiming a 1-6-1 mark in league openers. CSU dropped a 4-0 decision to nationally-ranked Milwaukee in last year's league opener and defeated Green Bay, 1-0, in 2010.

STAHL KEEPS STARTING
Senior Valerie Stahl started last week's lone match and has now started all 62 contests she has appeared in at CSU. Stahl, who has missed just two games in her career (one as a sophomore and one as a junior), is eight matches shy of becoming the 11th player in school history to play in 70 career matches. She is ranked ninth in program history with her 62 career starts.

FIVE ALIVE
CSU's five goals in the 5-1 win at IUPUI (Aug. 24) were the second most goals scored in a match in program history. The record for goals scored in six, set in a 6-0 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006.

CAPTAINS OF THE VIKING SHIP
Seniors Jaime Avona and Valerie Stahl are serving as team captains. Both have been mainstays in the program for the last three years. Avona has played in 60 matches with 58 starts, scoring seven goals with two assists. Stahl has started all 61 matches in her career, totaling 15 points with seven goals and one assist, while anchoring CSU's defense.

VIKINGS TABBED FIFTH IN HORIZON LEAGUE POLL
Cleveland State has been picked to finish fifth in the 2012 Horizon League Preseason Poll that was released on Wednesday. Milwaukee, which received five first place votes, and Detroit, which garnered the other three, tied for first with 44 points. They were followed by Valparaiso (35 points), Wright State (34), CSU (24), Loyola (23), Green Bay (12) and Youngstown State (8).

UP NEXT
The Vikings continue Horizon League play on Friday (Sept. 28) when CSU hosts Valparaiso at 7:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field.
