YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Cleveland State managed 24 shots, including 17 in the second half, but could not overcome an early Youngstown State goal, falling to the Penguins, 2-1, on Wednesday night in Horizon League women's soccer action.

CSU slipped to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in league play, while YSU improved to 7-5 this season and 2-1 in the Horizon League.

YSU jumped on the board just 1:08 into the match when Chelsey Haney sent a floater from about 12-yards out into the lower right corner. Katie Hohmann and Taylor Gapcynzki recorded the assists.

"That has been the story our our season, giving up an early goal," head coach Derrek Falor said. "We have been digging ourselves into early holes and having to fight an uphill battle and we need to find a way to come out with more intensity and energy from the opening whistle."

The Penguins made it 2-0 in the 35th minute when Shay Sade scored her first goal of the season off a rebound. 

It stayed that way until the 78:22 mark when Kelcey Fischer netted her third goal of the season off a rebound from a Jaime Avonashot that was blocked.

The Vikings had several chances late in the contest to tie the game, peppering the Penguins with 17 second half shots, including five on goal.

Sarah Wood made four saves for CSU, while Jackie Podolsky tallied six saves for the Penguins.

The Vikings will be back in action on Sunday (Oct. 14) when CSU travels to Detroit for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
