THE OPENING KICK
The Cleveland State women's soccer team concludes its three-match homestand with a pair of contests at Krenzler Field this week. The Vikings start the week with a 5:00 p.m. match against Green Bay on Wednesday (Oct. 3). It will be a doubleheader with the CSU men hosting Belmont at 2:00 p.m. The week concludes for the Vikings with a 1:00 p.m. match against Francis Marion on Saturday (Oct. 6) in a Senior Day match. CSU enters the week with a 3-8 overall record and an 0-2 mark in the Horizon League after dropping a 2-1 decision at home to Valparaiso in the Vikings lone match last week. Green Bay is 3-7-1 overall and 0-1-1 in Horizon League play, while Francis Marion is 5-5-1 this season.
REVIEWING THE LAST TIME OUT
CSU was in action one time last week. Here is a quick recap of the match.
Match #11: Valparaiso 2, CSU 1 (Sept. 28, Cleveland, Ohio)
Valparaiso scored two first half goals, the last coming with one second left in the half, and held on for a 2-1 win over Cleveland State. Vickie Havas scored CSU's goal off assists from Sarah Wood and Jaime Avona.
SENIOR DAY ON SATURDAY
The women's soccer program will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday when the Vikings host Francis Marion at 1:00 p.m. in CSU's second to last home match of the season and final non-league game. CSU's five seniors - Jaime Avona, Carla Ragone, Valerie Stahl, Rachel Strongoli and Sarah Zawie - will be honored in a pre-match ceremony.
HAVAS KEEPS SCORING POINTS
Freshman Vickie Havas has had quite a start to her collegiate career. The freshman forward from Stow tallied her team-leading fifth goal of the season in Saturday's (Sept. 28) loss to Valparaiso and has now scored at least one point in seven of CSU's 11 matches this year. Havas enters the week tied for the Horizon League lead in points (14) and assists (4) and ranked second with five goals.
LOOKING AT THE RECORD BOOK
Through 11 matches, freshman Vickie Havas is making a dent in the CSU single season record book. Havas' 14 points are tied for the sixth most in a season in program history, and just five shy of moving all the way up to second place with 19 points (Jennifer Wieand, 2007). Havas' four assists are tied for the fourth most in a season in school history, while her five goals are tied for the fifth most in a season at CSU.
WOOD NOTCHES FIRST CAREER POINT
Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Wood notched her first career point with an assist on CSU's goal against Valparaiso (Sept. 28). Wood scooped up a loose ball in front of the goal, made a quick throw to Jaime Avona who kicked it up field to Vickie Havas. Havas made a move past the goalkeeper and scored.
TIP OF THE HAT TO AVONA
Senior midfielder Jaime Avona became just the second player in program history to record a hat trick when she scored three goals in a 5-1 win at IUPUI (Aug. 24). Avona joins Ashley Walchack, who accomplished the feat in a 6-1 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006. Avona now has seven goals in her career, tied for the sixth most in program history.
STAHL KEEPS STARTING
Senior Valerie Stahl started CSU's lone match last week and has now started all 65 contests she has appeared in at CSU. Stahl, who has missed just two games in her career (one as a sophomore and one as a junior), is six matches shy of becoming the 11th player in school history to play in 70 career matches. She is ranked ninth in program history with her 65 career starts.
FIVE ALIVE
CSU's five goals in the 5-1 win at IUPUI (Aug. 24) were the second most goals scored in a match in program history. The record for goals scored in six, set in a 6-0 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006.
CAPTAINS OF THE VIKING SHIP
Seniors Jaime Avona and Valerie Stahl are serving as team captains. Both have been mainstays in the program for the last three years. Avona has played in 61 matches with 59 starts, scoring seven goals with three assists. Stahl has started all 65 matches in her career, totaling 15 points with seven goals and one assist, while anchoring CSU's defense.
UP NEXT
The Vikings are in action two times on the road next week, beginning with a 7:00 p.m. match at Youngstown State on Wednesday (Oct. 10). CSU then heads to Detroit for a 1:00 p.m. contest on Sunday (Oct. 14).
