Vikings Drop League Opener to Milwaukee

THE OPENING KICK
The Cleveland State women's soccer team will close out the regular season this weekend, traveling to Milwaukee for a Friday night contest. CSU's contest against the Panthers is slated for an 8:00 p.m. EST start at Engelmann Stadium. The Vikings dropped their lone contest last week, to fall to 6-10 overall and 2-4 in the Horizon League. Milwaukee enters the week with a 5-8-1 overall mark and a 4-2-0 record in league play. The Panthers are currently tied for first place in the league standings, having won three of their last four league contests.
REVIEWING THE LAST TIME OUT
CSU was in action once last week, below is a recap of the match.
Match #16: Wright State 5, CSU 1 (Oct. 20, Cleveland, Ohio)
Wright State got out to an early 3-0 lead before the Vikings were able to get on the board in the 39th minute with a Valerie Stahl penalty kick. The Raiders added on two more goals before the end of the contest as they outshot the Vikings, 16-10.
VIKINGS PICK UP WIN AGAINST YSU
In a rare occurence, the Vikings picked up an additional win earlier this week, as Youngstown State was forced to forfeit its victory over the Vikings on October 10. Unknowingly, the Penguins played with an ineligible player against CSU, giving the Vikings a crucial three points in the league standings. With the forfeit, CSU now stands at 6-10 overall this season and 2-4 in league play.
...FISCHER GOAL STILL STANDS
Despite the forfeit, all of the individual statistics for the contest still stand, including Kelcey Fischer's goal in the 79th minute. Fischer, who has three goals on the season, is one of just four Vikings to notch at least three goals this season (Vickie Havas-5, Jaime Avona-5, Valerie Stahl-3).
HAVAS KEEPS SCORING POINTS
Freshman Vickie Havas has had quite a start to her collegiate career. Havas recorded her fifth assist of the season in a 1-0 win over Green Bay (Oct. 3), while also increasing her point total to 15 - both marks rank second in the Horizon League standings. Havas has scored at least one point in eight of the 15 matches she has played in this year (sat out Francis Marion match).
LOOKING AT THE RECORD BOOK
Through 16 matches, freshman Vickie Havas is making a dent in the CSU single season record book. Havas' 15 points are tied for the fifth most in a season in program history, and just four shy of moving all the way up to second place with 19 points (Jennifer Wieand, 2007). Havas' five assists are tied for the third most in a season in school history, while her five goals are tied for the fifth most in a season at CSU.
AVONA IMPROVES CAREER MARKS
With her two goals and assist in two matches two weeks ago, senior Jamie Avona moved up the career record book. Avona now has nine career goals, ranking fourth all-time in CSU history, while her four assists are 10th most. Her 22 career points are fifth most in CSU history.
VIKINGS NOTCH FIRST SHUTOUT
CSU recorded its first shutout of the season in a 1-0 double overtime victory over Green Bay (Oct. 3). Sarah Wood posted six saves to earn the shutout, which was also aided by the solid defense of Valerie Stahl, Frederike Dubeau, Carla Ragone, Sarah Zawie and Erin O'Toole.
WOOD NOTCHES FIRST CAREER POINT
Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Wood notched her first career point with an assist on CSU's goal against Valparaiso (Sept. 28). Wood scooped up a loose ball in front of the goal, made a quick throw to Jaime Avona who kicked it up field to Vickie Havas. Havas made a move past the goalkeeper and scored.
TIP OF THE HAT TO AVONA
Senior midfielder Jaime Avona became just the second player in program history to record a hat trick when she scored three goals in a 5-1 win at IUPUI (Aug. 24). Avona joins Ashley Walchack, who accomplished the feat in a 6-1 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006. Avona now has nine goals in her career, the fourth most in program history.
STAHL KEEPS STARTING
Senior Valerie Stahl started last Saturday's contest against Wright State and has now started all 70 contests she has appeared in at CSU. Stahl, who has missed just two games in her career (one as a sophomore and one as a junior), is now the 11th player in school history to play in 70 career matches. She is ranked ninth in program history with her 69 career starts.
FIVE ALIVE
CSU's five goals in the 5-1 win at IUPUI (Aug. 24) were the second most goals scored in a match in program history. The record for goals scored in six, set in a 6-0 win over Delaware State on Aug. 27, 2006.
UP NEXT
Depending on the results of this week's league contests, CSU will wait and see if they earn a spot in the 2012 Horizon League Women's Soccer Tournament.
