Vikings Drop Exhibition Opener at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michigan scored three first half goals en route to a 5-0 win over Cleveland State in the opening women's soccer exhibition match of the season on Tuesday afternoon.

"This wasn't the way we wanted to start the exhibition season," head coach Derrek Falor said. "We made way to many mistakes and a good team like Michigan is going to capitalize on them. We didn't play very good one-on-one defense and that led to a majority of their goals and we also didn't win the 50-50 balls.

"I did think that our freshman played well in their first action," Falor continued. "I thought Erin (O'Toole) did some good things in the back and Haleigh (Shingary) was solid up front. Allie (Sieradzki) and Jen (Jankowski) were also very solid and gave us some good minutes.

"I also thought Carla (Ragone) and Sarah (Zawie) helped shore some things up on defense when we sent them into the match."

Clare Stachel gave Michigan an early lead just eight minutes in with a penalty kick after a Viking penalty in the box. The Wolverines made it 2-0 at the 19:04 mark on a Corinne Harris tally and Toni McCombs made it 3-0 with a goal six minutes later.

"It was all just poor one-on-one defending by us and that is something we are going to have to clean up," Falor said. "It wasn't like they were building a 10 or 15 pass run up the field on us."

Harris added her second goal 12 minutes into the second half and Meghan Toohey scored with just over three minutes left to provide the final margin.

The two teams did play an extra 20 minutes, comprised mostly of reserves who didn't play much of the 90 minutes and Falor was pleased with what he saw out of that group.

"The group that played the extra 20 minutes was very impressive with their time," Falor said. "Becca (Coleman) made several good reads coming off the line and Meghan (Zidonis) showed some flashes." 

 
 
 


The Vikings are back in action on Thursday (Aug. 9) when CSU hosts Oakland for its second of three exhibition matches of the preseason. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field.
