Havas Scores Goal in 2-1 Loss at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Cleveland State freshman Vickie Havas scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season, but the Vikings dropped a 2-1 decision at Duquesne in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.

The loss drops the Vikings to 3-7 this year, while Duquesne improved to 4-5-1.

"We continue to make the small, mental errors and those are what's hurting us," head coachDerrek Falor said. "Once again, we gave up the first goal of the game and this time it was in the first minute. We have to figure that out going forward because we can't continue to play from behind.

"We didn't come out with a lot of energy to start the match, but I thought we played with more passion in the second half when we were able to tie the game. We need to find a way to come out from the opening whistle and play aggressive. I think we have been playing well in the middle third of the field, but we need to be sharper in the boxes."

Duquesne took a 1-0 lead just 38 seconds into the match when Caroline Lacy scored. The Dukes maintained that advantage until the 81st minute when CSU managed to knot the contest at 1-1 on Havas' goal off an assist from Samantha Sarmento.

For Havas, it was her team-leading fourth goal of the season and allowed her to increase her team-leading point total to 12. She has also tallied at least one point in six of CSU's 10 matches this season.

For Sarmento, it was her first career point in her first career start.

"We had a nice build up down the field and Samantha was able to send a nice cross to Vickie who finished with a header," Falor said.

The tie did not last long, however, as Duquesne scored the game-winner less than four minutes later when Morgan Herbert scored her fifth goal of the season off a free kick from Michelle Mooren.

The Vikings out-shot Duquesne, 8-5, while each team managed just one corner kick. CSU was whistled for 12 fouls compared to three for the Dukes.

CSU returns to Horizon League play on Friday (Sept. 28) when the Vikings start a three-match homestand against Valparaiso at 7:00 p.m.
