Steve Weir has put his stamp on the Cleveland State men’s and women’s golf programs during his eight years at the helm. During his tenure, the men’s squad has captured five Horizon League titles and made five appearances at the NCAA regionals, while the 15-year old women’s program has shown growth each year into a league contender.

A tireless recruiter, Weir has continually brought in highly-decorated players, including several all-state selections and student-athletes who have competed in and won prestigious tournaments.

In his eight seasons at the helm, Weir has developed 21 first team All-Horizon League players, including Jake Scott who claimed medalist honors at the league championship in 2008 and 2009, Kent Monas, the 2011 Horizon League Player of the Year and Andrew Bailey who was the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Horizon League Player of the Year.

Last year, Weir led the men’s squad to their second straight Horizon League title, while the women’s squad finished third. The men went wire-to-wire for the second straight season and boasted three players who finished in the top-12.

The Vikings finished 13th at the NCAA regionals, in Bremerton, Wash., last year.

Three years ago, Weir guided the men’s squad to a runner-up finish at the league championship, while the women’s squad placed third, the second best finish in program history.

That came on the heels of a pair of youthful squads finishing in the top-four at the 2012 Horizon League Championship with the men - featuring two sophomores and one freshman - finishing third and the women’s team - with four sophomores and one freshman - placing fourth.

The 2010-11 season saw Weir lead the men’s squad to the Horizon League Championship - the squad’s fourth league title in the six years, while helping the women place fourth with a team that featured three freshmen and two sophomores.

Under Weir, the men’s team has enjoyed unprecedented success, capturing the 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2014 Horizon League titles and advancing to the NCAA Regional Championship all four years.

In addition, seven players have earned medalist honors under the direction of Weir, while the 2007-08 squad set the school record for lowest round, firing 277 during the first and second rounds at the IPFW Fall Classic.

At the 2011 league championship, Bailey and Michael Klaric tied for co-medalist honors.

Weir has also led the women’s program to new heights during his tenure, guiding the squad to a second place finish at the league tournament in 2009, the best showing in program history. CSU has posted several of the lowest rounds in school history under Weir, including a school record 296 at the 2014 YSU Kickoff.

But Weir’s successes go beyond the golf course as both teams have also been successful in the classroom. That was never more apparent than in 2009, 2014 and 2015 when the women’s team captured the “Best of the Best” Team Award at the John Konstantinos Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon. The award is presented to the sport having the highest team grade point average in the athletics department.

Last season, the women’s squad ranked 13th in the nation among all women’s golf programs with a 3.708 cumulative grade point average.

Weir joined the CSU golf staff as an assistant coach in 2007 with a familiarity to the Viking program, having served as an assistant coach to the men’s and women’s squads in 2006-07. He has also been the Assistant Golf Professional at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinkley since April, 2007.

He had an outstanding collegiate career, spending time at Kent State and Baldwin-Wallace before enrolling at CSU in September of 2005.

In his lone golf season as a Viking, Weir earned first team All-Horizon League honors in 2006 and was a two-time Horizon League Golfer of the Week.

He was second on the team in stroke average (75.3), carding a school-record, eight-under-par 63 en route to a runner-up finish at the Belmont Intercollegiate. Weir also finished second at the Dayton Spring Invitational, helping the Vikings win the team title by eight shots.

Weir was a large factor in the Vikings claiming the 2006 Horizon League Championship and advancing to the NCAA regionals, shooting rounds of 70-72-74 (216) and finishing 11th overall.

In 2005, Weir captured the Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship and also advanced to the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.

At Baldwin-Wallace, Weir holds the best season average in school-history when he posted 75.2 strokes per round in the fall of 2003, including a low round of 70.

Weir and his wife, Alicia, have a three-year old daughter, Kinslee, and two-year old son, Bryce.
