ROCHESTER, Mich. – Sophomore Madison Butler tied for third overall to lead the Cleveland State University women's golf team to a sixth-place showing of 12 teams after Tuesday's final round of the Golden Grizzlies Invitational.
CSU improved eight shots as a team from Monday to Tuesday, shooting +36 (324) in the final round to finish at +80 (656). That allowed the Vikings to edge up one spot in the team standings from where they stood at the conclusion of the opening round. The event was played at the 6,056-yard, par-72 Katke-Cousins Golf Course.
Cleveland State led the field with seven birdies Tuesday and also tied for first in the field in par-5 scoring in the second round (5.25). Five of the six Vikings competing lowered their scores from Monday to Tuesday.
Butler was even par through 11 holes Tuesday, with three birdies, three bogeys and five pars, but couldn't quite keep up that pace and finished at +5 (77). That left her at +11 (155) for the tournament, and it was her second top-five showing in three events.
Junior Kaylee Neumeister shot an 82 Tuesday to finish the event in a tie for 22nd with 166 strokes. Neumeister did not make a double bogey (or worse) during the final round.
Sophomores Amanda Baker and Ashley Knight were both right behind Neumeister's tournament total, finishing with cumulative scores of 167 and 168, respectively. Knight displayed vast improvement from the opening round as she gained eight shots, firing a +8 (80) in the final round.
Freshmen Grace Zimmerman and Meg Rossouw both gained a few shots from the opening round in Tuesday's action. Zimmerman finished the event with a cumulative score of 177 while Rossouw, playing as an individual, was one shot back at 178.
Butler and Knight tied for the lead in the field with three birdies each Tuesday. Knight led the field in par-5 scoring in the final round (-1). Butler tied for first in par-5 scoring for the tournament (5.12) and tied for third in par-4 scoring (4.35) in the event.
Cleveland State will take next week off from competition before returning to southeastern Michigan for the Shirley Spork Invitational Oct. 8-9.
