ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Cleveland State University women's golf team sits seventh of 12 teams after playing the opening 18 holes of the Golden Grizzlies Invitational Monday at Katke-Cousins Golf Course.
CSU shot +44 (332) as a team in the opening round though the Vikings are just six shots out of fourth place. Cleveland State is third of the five Horizon League teams competing as the Vikings are ahead of Detroit Mercy and Northern Kentucky heading into Tuesday's final round.
On a brutal scoring day for the entire field, sophomore Madison Butler led CSU at +6 (78), putting her in a tie for fifth. Butler led the field with 13 pars and finished strong by making par on each of the final four holes. She is just two shots out of second place entering the final round.
Sophomore Amanda Baker and junior Kaylee Neumeister followed behind Butler by shooting 82 and 84, respectively. Baker made the Vikings' only birdie on the day, coming at the par-4 11th, and is just inside the top 20. Neumeister is tied for 30th in the field of 69.
Sophomore Ashley Knight and freshman Grace Zimmerman posted scores of 88 and 90, respectively. Fellow freshman Meg Rossouw, playing as an individual, also finished with a 90.
Tuesday's final round will commence with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.
