2017-18 Cleveland State Women's Golf Season Highlights

  • Cleveland State finished third at the Horizon League Championship. The Vikings were in sixth place after the first round, but used a second round 315 to climb into fourth place and a final round 316 allowed CSU to finish third.
  • The Vikings had four top-three finishes this year, including a pair of runner-up finishes.
  • CSU set the single season scoring record with a 316.0 average, breaking last year's old mark by more than one shot.
  • Freshman Madison Butler began her career in style when she claimed medalist honors at the YSU Roseann Schwartz Invitational with rounds of 72-77 (149). She became the fifth player in school history to win a tournament.
  • Freshman Ashley Knight followed Butler's win with a win of her own as she won the John Carroll Invitational with rounds of 73-80 (153) as an individual, while Brooke Ciccone tied for third place at the event.
  • The Vikings set the school record for lowest round with a 292 in the first round of the Ball State Cardinal Classic. A second round 299 – the third lowest round in school history – helped CSU set the 36-hole school record at 591.
  • Senior Sophie Kelner shot back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 to open the Cardinal Classic and set the school record for best 36-hole score by two shots. Kelner's final round 77 helped her tie for 12th place with a 221 total.
  • Sophomore Kaylee Neumeister shot an opening round 70 at the Cardinal Classic, the best round by a Viking this year.
  • Butler fired a first round 73 at the Cardinal Classic, while senior Emily Turski's 77 was the fourth score to count in the school record round.
  • Freshman Amanda Baker tied for 18th at the Shirley Spork Invitational, including a first round 74, which was her best round of the season.
  • Turski fired a career-low round of 74 in the final round of the Grand Canyon Invitational.
  • Turski recorded her first career top-10 finish as she tied for 10th place at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational with back-to-back rounds of 76.
  • Turski and Neumeister tied for fifth place at the Sand Ridge Shootout as both shot 76 to help CSU finish second.
  • Butler just missed a spot on the Horizon League All-Tournament team as she shot 81-76-75 (232) to tie for sixth place.
  • Butler and Neumeister were both named to the All-Horizon League second team.
  • For Neumeister, it was the second time in as many years that she earned a spot on the all-league team after being named to the first team as a freshman.
  • Butler led the team with a 78.7 scoring average, the fifth lowest for a season in school history and the second lowest for a freshman.
  • Neumeister's average of 78.8 is the sixth lowest for a season in program history. Her career average of 78.4 is tops in CSU women's golf history.
  • Kelner capped her career with an 80.9 scoring average, the fourth best in school history.
  • Kelner also received the Ms. Viking Award at the VESPYS, which is presented to the presented to the CSU senior that represent what it means to be the ultimate Viking. The student-athlete must have a high commitment to academics, have significant impact on their team through athletic performance, take on a leadership role, maintain a positive influence both on and off the field, and have been actively involved in community service projects.
  • Kelner was also the recipient of the John and Sandra Konstantinos's Scholarship, which is presented to the student-athlete who best reflects and embodies the virtues of former CSU Director of Athletics John Konstantinos, including leadership, integrity, perseverance, loyalty and humility.
