Katelin Oney will begin her third year as an assistant coach on the Cleveland State sidelines during the 2020-21 season, bringing with her seven years of coaching experience.

Last season, Oney was an instrumental part of the Viking coaching staff that led Cleveland State to a 21-11 record, marking just the third 20-win campaign in program history. Oney also helped the Vikings post a record-setting 11-game winstreak between November 13, 2019 and December 28, 2019, helping Cleveland State post double-digit consecutive wins for the first time.

Oney joined the Vikings for the 2018-19 season after a two-year journey at North Dakota, where she served as an assistant coach from 2016-18. 

During her two years with the Fighting Hawks, Oney helped UND to a 20-win record during the 2016-17 season, helping the Fighting Hawks to a Big Sky Conference Regular Season Championship and a postseason bid to the WNIT.

Prior to her time at UND, Oney spent the 2015-16 season as an assistant coach with Division II St. Mary’s University. 

Oney got her start in collegiate coaching at Division II Wayne State College, where she spent two years as a Graduate Assistant with the women’s basketball team. Oney, along with Coach Kielsmeier, led the Wildcats to a 56-11 overall record during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 campaigns, helping nationally ranked WSC win back-to-back NSIC championships. 

A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Oney played four years at the University of Northern Iowa where she became an All-Tournament Team selection and ended her career ranked fifth in program history for most three-pointers made and ninth in three-point field goal percentage. Oney was part of back-to-back MVC Tournament championship teams, while making two straight NCAA Tournament appearances with the Panthers.

In the spring of 2018, Oney was named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Thirty Under 30 list, which recognizes the top young coaching talent in the country. The award honors those that have exemplified their involvement in community service, mentorship, professional manner, and professional association involvement.

Oney earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a minor in literacy in 2013, and received her master’s in educational-instructional curriculum leadership with an emphasis in elementary education in 2015 from Wayne State College.
