CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State women's basketball head coach Kate Peterson Abiad added her final piece to the 2017-18 recruiting puzzle, as NJCAA All-American Rachel Slaney (Barneveld, Wis.) has decided to continue her collegiate career as a Viking.

Slaney, who played her first two years at Madison College in Madison, Wisconsin, will enter Cleveland State as a junior with two years of eligibility remaining.

"I feel extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to add Rachel to our roster at such a late date. Rachel is someone whom we pursued in the spring, because we believed her abilities and statistics would fill a void that we have in our team," Peterson Abiad said. "Her versatility as well as her rebounding presence will give us an added advantage when combined with the veteran players that we have returning. Rachel has a scoring mentality and a very high basketball IQ, which will make it possible for her to contribute quickly."

As a sophomore last season, Slaney made history at Madison College, becoming the program's all-time leading scorer and the first player in program history to earn All-America honors in back-to-back seasons.

Slaney finished her Madison career with a program-best 1,161 points after averaging 15.9 points per game as a freshman and 25.3 points per game as a sophomore.

After finishing her sophomore season ranked fifth in the nation in scoring, Slaney was named Second Team NJCAA All-American and Honorable Mention WBCA All-American, while also picking up North Central Community College Conference Player of the Year honors. 

As a rookie, Slaney helped Madison College to a No. 1 national ranking in the NJCAA Division III women's basketball poll, picking up honorable mention NJCAA and WBCA All-America accolades.

During her two seasons, Slaney led Madison College to back-to-back 20-win seasons, starting all but two games during her two-year career en route to picking up First Team All-Conference and All-Region accolades during both campaigns. Throughout 57 total games played at Madison College, Slaney averaged 20.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 3.5 steals per contest.

In high school, Slaney was a four-time all-conference honoree, and earned all-state accolades as a sophomore, junior and senior at Barneveld High School.
