Women’s Basketball Spends Time With ASAS Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Last month the Cleveland State women's basketball team logged in its annual community service hours, spending two days with the After-School All-Stars.

 
The After-School All-Stars is a program that was started in 2000 to provide comprehensive after-school programs that keep children safe and help them succeed in school and in life. In the state of Ohio, there are three ASAS programs that serve over 800 students in Columbus, Cleveland, and Toledo.

Throughout the two afternoons, the Cleveland State student-athletes split into groups with the ASAS students and participated in basketball drills and demonstrations and explained how important life skills off the court are to your future.

"It was very inspirational to be looked up to by the ASAS kids and provide local youth with great advice for the future," redshirt sophomore Ashanti Abshaw said. "I hope I inspired them to take their basketball games to another level, while also showing them there is more to life than what happens on the court."

On the basketball court, the Vikings led the ASAS students in drills focusing on dribbling, shooting, and stretching. Off the court, the Vikings helped the ASAS students create goal sheets for themselves while focusing on future academic achievements.
