Vikings Come Up Short In Overtime At Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Cleveland State women's basketball team played its second straight overtime game Thursday afternoon, falling at Milwaukee, 59-58 in Horizon League action. The Vikings are now 5-17 on the season and 2-10 in league action.

The Game
After going into the halftime break trailing by 13 points at 34-21, the Vikings were able to battle back and bring the deficit to single digits by the end of the third quarter. Cleveland State closed the third frame on a 6-2 run, getting points on a pair of three-pointers from Ashanti Abshaw and Olivia Voskuhl, putting the score at 43-35 going into the fourth quarter.

Over the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, the Vikings went on an 8-0 run to tie the contest at 43-43 with 5:36 left on the clock. The Panthers were then able to regain the lead following a 6-0 run of their own, gaining a 49-43 advantage with just under four minutes left to play.

Cleveland State then went 4-for-4 from the free throw line over a span of 31 seconds, to come within two points at 49-47 with 2:07 left on the clock. After forcing a Milwaukee turnover on the next possession, Adesuwa Aideyman nailed a three-point to give the Vikings a 50-49 lead with 1:27 left on the clock. The Vikings were then able to gain a two-point lead at 51-49 after Khayla Livingston split a pair of free throws, but the Panthers were able to tie the contest at 51-51 after converting a pair of free throws with just four seconds left on the clock, sending the game into overtime.

Cleveland State got out to a good start during the overtime period, with Livingston posting five straight points for the Vikings on a three-pointer and a pair of free throws, gaining a 56-51 advantage with 3:22 left to play. After the Panthers were able to close the gap to just two points at the 56-54 mark, Ashanti Abshaw extended Cleveland State's lead to 58-54 with just under one minute left to play.

The Panthers were then able to come within one point following a three-pointer at the 0:42 mark, and then went up by one at the 59-58 mark following a jumper with just seven seconds left on the clock. The Vikings would have one last shot at a winning field goal, but the Milwaukee defense proved to be too much for the Vikings, as the Panthers came away with the 59-58 overtime victory.
