Abshaw Picks Up Freshman Of The Week Honors

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the fourth time this season Cleveland State's Ashanti Abshaw has been named the Horizon League Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week, as she earned the honor Monday, February 8.

Abshaw is one of four freshmen/redshirt freshmen to earn the weekly accolade this season, and one of two to earn the honor at least four times.

Last week, Abshaw led the Vikings to a 1-1 record, as Cleveland State split its contests against Detroit and Oakland.

Against Detroit, Abshaw posted 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals, and followed that up with her sixth double-double of the season with 24 points and 17 rebounds along with six steals against Oakland. Abshaw has now tallied double-digit points in all but one game this season, including five 20-point performances.

The 24 points against Oakland was just shy of tying her career-high, while the 17 rebounds and six steals marked career-bests for the Cleveland Heights native.

For the season, Abshaw has a team-high 333 points and 184 rebounds, ranking fifth (15.9 ppg) and fourth (8.8 rpg), respectively, among Horizon League players. With at least eight games left to play this season, she is closing in on the freshman class scoring record of 387 points, which was set by Debra Taylor during the 1987-88 season.

Abshaw and the Vikings will continue Horizon League play this weekend, traveling to Milwaukee (Thursday, Feb. 11) and Green Bay (Saturday, Feb. 13).
