SETTING THE SCENE
The Cleveland State women's basketball team will continue its brief two-game roadswing this Wednesday (Dec. 18), facing the New Hampshire Wildcats at 12:00 p.m. The Vikings enter Wednesday's game with a 4-5 record after falling to VCU last time out. CSU will be taking on the Wildcats for just the fourth time in program history, as UNH owns a 2-1 advantage in the overall series with Cleveland State's lone victory against the Wildcats coming last season.
LAST TIME OUT
The Vikings dropped a one-point contest at VCU, falling to the Rams, 76-75 in the final seconds of the contest. After trailing for the majority of the game, CSU was able to chip away at the lead until the Vikings finally gained control over the final nine minutes. The Rams then regained their final lead of the game when they converted a layup in the closing seconds, forcing the Vikings to take a last second shot that didn't fall. Four Vikings notched double-digit points, led by Imani Gordon with 19.
A WIN WEDNESDAY WOULD…
Put CSU at .500 for the season (5-5)…Even the all-time record at 2-2 between Cleveland State and New Hampshire…Mark the Vikings' fourth win out of their last six contests.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
New Hampshire enters Wednesday's contest with a matching 4-5 record, after dropping three of its last four contests…The Wildcats have been led offensively by the duo of Corinne Coia (11.8 ppg) and Kaylee Kilpatrick (10.2 ppg) who are both averaging double-digit points after the first nine games, while Kelsey Hogan (9.3 ppg) is just shy of the double-digit mark…Kilpatrick is also one of UNH's top rebounders (7.2 rpg) along with Elizabeth Belanger (7.3 rpg)…For the season, UNH has been shooting .379 from the field (187-493) and just .254 from behind-the-arc (36-142)…The trio of Kilpatrick, Hogan and Belanger have started all nine games for the Wildcats, while Coia, Ariel Gaston, Kristen Anderson, and Sarah-Marie Frankenberger have also picked up a few starts.
SCHMITT FROM BEHIND-THE-ARC
For the third straight game, Haley Schmitt has converted four three-pointers, going 4-for-6 from behind-the-arc at VCU (Dec. 15). Schmitt has 15 three-pointers so far this season, also going 4-for-7 from three-point against Ohio (Dec. 5) and 4-for-5 against ECU (Dec. 1).
…SCHMITT AMONG THE LEAGUE'S SHOOTERS
For the third straight week, Haley Schmitt leads the Horizon League in field goal percentage, posting a .541 clip after the first nine games of the season. Schmitt has converted 40 of her 74 attempts from the floor, and has notched at least a 60-percent field goal percentage in five games this year. Schmitt also leads the league in three-point field goal percentage (.536), converting 15 of her 28 attempts so far this year.
GORDON LEADING THE CSU OFFENSE
Imani Gordon, who ranks eighth in the league averaging 16.7 points per game, has been CSU's leading scorer in five games so far this season. Last time out, Gordon led the Vikings with 19 points against VCU (Dec. 15) - marking her sixth game with at least 15 points. She also led the CSU offense against Eastern Michigan, Florida Atlantic, IUPUI, and East Carolina.
COLEMAN GETS BACK ON TRACK
With a 13-point performance against VCU last Sunday, Cori Coleman got back on the offensive track, posting double-digit points for the first time in five games. Coleman is one of four Vikings to average more than 10 points per game this season, ranking 21st in the league with 10.4 ppg. Last Sunday's performance marked her fourth double-digit scoring game of the season and the 36th of her career.
…AND ECLIPSES 700-POINT MARK
With her 13-point performance against VCU, Cori Coleman eclipsed the 700-point mark for her career, and enters Wednesday's contest with 712 career points. Coleman, who is averaging 10.4 points per game this season, leads all current Vikings in career points, and has tallied 94 total points so far this season.
CLEVELAND STATE FROM BEHIND-THE-ARC
The Vikings converted a season-best 13 three-point field goals against VCU last time out, a mark that is tied for fifth all-time in program history. For the season, CSU is shooting .382 (76-199) from behind-the-arc - leading the Horizon League in the category. The Vikings have knocked down 10 or more three-pointers in five games this year (Butler, EMU, ECU, Ohio & VCU).
GORDON & GREEN RACK UP THE DOUBLE-DIGIT GAMES
The junior duo of Kiersten Green and Imani Gordon have posted double-digit points in all nine games so far this season - accounting for 291 points, or 45-percent of CSU's offense. Entering Wednesday's contest, Gordon ranks eighth among league players averaging 16.7 points per game, while Green ranks ninth (15.7 ppg), making CSU one of just three teams with at least two players ranked in the top-10.
VIKINGS LEADING THE WAY
As a team, Cleveland State leads the Horizon League in three statistical categories, while ranking in the top-three in four others. After the first six weeks of the season, the Vikings lead the league in field goal percentage (.429), three-point field goal percentage (.382), and steals (10.6). CSU ranks third in scoring defense (70.7), free throw offense (.719), assists (14.6), and turnover margin (+3.4).
