GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Cleveland State women's basketball team had a solid first half of play, but a strong Green Bay offense was too much to handle during the second frame, as the Vikings fell, 88-51 Thursday evening. The loss against the Phoenix drops CSU to 12-12 on the season and 4-7 in Horizon League play, while Green Bay improves to 20-2 and remains perfect in league action (9-0).
The Vikings were paced offensively by Shalonda Winton and Cori Coleman, who combined for 38 of Cleveland State's 51 points Thursday evening. Winton had a team-high 21 along with 11 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season, while Coleman posted 17 - including a pair of three-pointers.
After the Phoenix opened up a 9-2 lead at the beginning of the first half, Cleveland State was able to tie the game at 15-15 following a 13-6 run which included five points from Coleman and four from Winton and Imani Gordon. Green Bay was able to extend its lead once again over the next two minutes, before seven straight Coleman points brought the Vikings back within one (25-24) with 8:03 left. Green Bay then closed the half on a 12-0 run, going into halftime with a 13-point lead at 37-24.
Over the first 5:49 of the second half CSU was held to just two points, as Green Bay extended its lead to 20 at the 46-26 mark. Back-to-back three-pointers from King at the 10:55 mark stopped an 11-2 Phoenix run, and a Winton and-one on the following possession put the score at 58-38 with 9:42 left.
Green Bay then went on a 13-3 run over the next 2:34 to gain a 30-point lead at 71-41 and then closed the contest by outscoring CSU 17-10 for the 88-51 victory.
As a team Cleveland State shot just 31-percent from the floor (17-54), while Green Bay was 32-for-59 (.542) from the field. The Vikings notched 30 rebounds against the Phoenix, including 14 offensive boards. CSU also tallied 12 assists and notched seven steals.
Cleveland State will conclude its Wisconsin roadswing this Saturday (Feb. 16), traveling to Milwaukee for a 3:00 p.m. EST contest.
