INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - For the sixth straight season a Cleveland State women's basketball player has been named to the Preseason All-Horizon League First Team, as senior Shalonda Winton earned the honor Monday (Oct. 8) afternoon. The league made the announcement at the Horizon League Women's Basketball Media Day, which took place in Chicago, Ill.
Winton's selection to the preseason all-league first team is the second of her career, as she was also tabbed a first-team preseason honoree as a junior.
Last year Winton became the 23rd Viking to record 1,000 career points, and enters her senior season ranking 12th all-time at Cleveland State with 1,181 points. Winton also became just the third CSU player to notch 500 points and 300 rebounds in the same season, recording 566 points and 303 boards during the 2011-12 season. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native also ranks seventh all-time in the CSU record books with 763 rebounds.
Winton ended her junior season ranked third in the Horizon League in scoring (18.3), fourth in rebounding (9.8), third in defensive rebounding (6.7), sixth in blocked shots (1.1), seventh in offensive rebounds (3.0), and eighth in steals (1.8) and free throw percentage (.772).

Along with the preseason teams, the league also announced the 2012-13 preseason poll, with the Vikings tabbed to finish fifth out of the nine Horizon League schools. The preseason poll and the preseason all-league teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and select media members.
Green Bay, the preseason favorite, collected 241 votes and 25 first place votes, while Detroit was selected to finish second with 210 votes and two first place votes. Wright State came in third (191 votes), while Loyola was tabbed to finish fourth (152) ahead of the Vikings who collected 123 votes.
Cleveland State was followed by UIC (90), Milwaukee (85), Youngstown State (77) and Valparaiso (46) to round out the poll.
The Vikings will open the 2012-13 season on Thursday, November 1, when CSU hosts Walsh University at 7:00 p.m. for an exhibition contest in Woodling Gymnasium.
