SETTING THE SCENE
After returning home for the first time in over two weeks and capturing a 68-57 victory over VCU, Cleveland State will hit the road once again this weekend, traveling to Bloomington, Ind. The Vikings will face the Indiana Hoosiers at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 2 in Assembly Hall. Entering the contest CSU stands at 2-4 on the season, while the Hoosiers are 6-1. This will be the fifth contest between the two teams, with the Hoosiers owning a 4-1 overall record. CSU's lone victory against Indiana came during the 2009-10 season, in a 77-75 overtime thriller in Cleveland.
SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS
Behind first-year head coach Curt Miller, Indiana enters Sunday's contest on a six match win streak, most recently defeating Clemson (52-49) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The 6-1 record marks the best start through seven games for the Hoosiers since the 2006-07 season, while the six straight wins is a program-best since the 2008-09 season. Indiana has held its opponents to under 50 points five times this year, while they have also held their opponents to under a 30-percent field goal percentage twice. Aulani Sinclair, who has led the Hoosiers in scoring in five of the first six contests, leads the team averaging 20.3 points per game, while Milika Taufa leads Indiana with 7.6 rebounds per game.
WINTON MAKING A DEFENSIVE DIFFERENCE
Shalonda Winton moved up the career blocks list against VCU, posting her sixth block of the season. Winton is now tied for fifth on the all-time career blocks list with 83 and ranks second in the league averaging 1.0 blocked shots per game this season.
SCHMITT CONTINUES STRONG PLAY
Haley Schmitt, who recently set a career-high at Nevada (Nov. 23), bettered the mark Wednesday night against VCU, recording 12 points on a 4-for-6 performance from the field. Schmitt was also 2-for-2 from behind the arc, while also posting five rebounds, an assist and a steal.
GREEN SETS CAREER-HIGH AGAINST WOLFPACK
Kiersten Green recorded a personal-best at Nevada (Nov. 23), posting 13 points, including a 2-for-3 performance from three-point. Green was 5-for-9 (.556) from the field against the Wolfpack, and posted three assists and three steals.
...GREEN CONTINUES SCORING STREAK
Kiersten Green, who struggled offensively through the first three games of the season, continued her scoring streak against VCU, posting her fourth straight double-digit game with 12 points. Green was 3-for-8 from the field and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
WINTON BECOMES ALL-TIME LEADER IN OFFENSIVE BOARDS
With six offensive rebounds against Nevada (Nov. 23), Shalonda Winton became the all-time leader in the category at Cleveland State, and enters Sunday's contest with 291. Winton, who now has 834 total rebounds on her career, passed Lanette Taylor (1989-92) who tallied 283 offensive rebounds during her career.
VIKINGS STRONG OFFENSIVELY AGAINST SANTA CLARA
As a team, Cleveland State tallied a .450 field goal percentage (27-for-60) against Santa Clara - their best mark of the season. The last time CSU recorded at least a .450 field goal percentage was against Green Bay (1/21/12) last year when the Vikings went 23-for-50 (.460) from the field.
DOUBLE-DIGIT SCORING GAMES
For the last four contests Cleveland State has had at least three players score in double-digits, including Shalonda Winton andKiersten Green who have tallied 10 or more points in all four contests. In all three games, the top three point-scorers for CSU have combined for over 60-percent of the Vikings' points.
VIKINGS WITH THE STEAL
Cleveland State ranks second in the league averaging 10.5 steals per game, while four players rank in the top-10 individually - the most from a single school. The Vikings have notched double-digit steals in four contests this season, including a season-high 15 against Nevada. The individuals who rank in the top-10 are; Shalonda Winton (3.2-1st), Imani Gordon (2.3-4th), Kiersten Green(2.0-6th) and Cori Coleman (1.8-10th).
WINTON IN THE NATIONAL STATS
After the first six games of the season, Shalonda Winton ranks in the top-60 nationally in four categories. Winton ranks fifth nationally averaging 23.5 points per game, while she ranks 14th nationally with 11.8 rebounds per game. As one of just 15 players nationwide to have at least five double-doubles on the year, Winton ranks fourth, while also ranking 60th with 3.2 steals per contest.
CSU CRASHING THE BOARDS
For the fourth time this season CSU outrebounded their opponent, holding a 38-35 advantage against VCU Wednesday. The Vikings also held the advantage against Illinois (50-37), Ohio (38-35) and Nevada (43-41), while the 50 boards against Illinois marked the first 50-rebound game since the 2009-10 season when CSU notched 53 against Indiana.
WINTON REACHES 800-REBOUND MILESTONE
With her 12 boards at Illinois earlier this season, Shalonda Winton became the sixth Viking all-time to reach the 800-rebound milestone. Winton currently ranks sixth all-time at CSU with 822 rebounds, needing 33 more boards to move into fifth place which is held by Lanette Taylor (854 rebounds).
WINTON TIES CAREER-HIGH WITH 31 POINTS AGAINST NEVADA
Shalonda Winton's 31 points against the Wolfpack tied a career-high for the senior, and marked the third 30-point game of her career. Winton is one of two league players to post 30-point games this season (Shareta Brown, Detroit) and has a league-high 124 points through five games.
UP NEXT
The Vikings will take six days off from competition and return to the court against Miami (OH) in a 2:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, Dec. 8. Next Saturday's game will mark the first of four home contests for the Vikings in a five-game stretch.
