2012-13 Women's Basketball Schedule
2012-13 Women's Basketball Schedule
CLEVELAND, Ohio- Cleveland State University head women's basketball coach Kate PetersonAbiad announced the program's 2012-13 schedule Wednesday, which features nine contests against opponents who played in postseason tournaments last year and three first-time opponents.
"This season's schedule will be our most challenging in the past several years. We have a great mix of both major and mid-major teams on our schedule that will allow us to really see who we are as a team," Peterson Abiad said. "We will be playing two Big Ten teams on the road and welcoming an SEC opponent to the Wolstein Center, so we definitely have a mix of games that fans will be excited to see. We also have three first-time opponents on our schedule this year, so it will be an interesting year and a good opportunity for us as we move the program forward."
The Vikings will open the season with a pair of exhibition contests against Walsh University and Ursuline College on Wednesday, October 31 and Sunday, November 4, respectively.
CSU will take the floor for the first regular season contest on Friday, November 9 as the Vikings welcome the South Dakota Coyotes to the Wolstein Center for a 5:00 p.m. contest. This game will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools, while the Vikings will also be facing Nevada and Virginia Commonwealth for the first time during the 2012-13 season.
The Vikings will hit the road for the first time during 2012-13 the following week, as they play four straight games away from home, including the John Ascuaga's Nugget Classic, which is hosted by the University of Nevada. CSU will open this stretch at Ohio on Tuesday, November 13 and will then travel to Illinois on Sunday, November 18. The opening round games of the John Ascuaga's Nugget Classic will be on Friday, November 23 with CSU facing Nevada and Santa Clara taking on Toledo. The following day there will be a consolation and championship game, at 5:00 p.m. EST and 7:30 p.m. EST.
Cleveland State will split its time at home and on the road the next two weeks, hosting VCU (Wednesday, Nov. 28) and Miami (OH) (Saturday, Dec. 8), and playing at Indiana (Sunday, Dec. 2) and Tennessee State (Sunday, Dec. 16).
Peterson Abiad and the Vikings will close out the non-conference portion of their schedule with a four-game homestand, starting with Ole Miss on Tuesday, December 18. CSU will then host New Hampshire on Saturday, December 22, Lake Erie on Sunday, December 30 and Butler on Thursday, January 3.
The Vikings will open their 16-game Horizon League schedule at UIC, facing the Flames on Wednesday, January 9. The complete release on the Horizon League schedule can be found here.
Regular season play ends on March 7, with the first round of the Horizon League Championship beginning on March 11. Quarterfinal matchups will then take place on March 13, with the semifinals on March 15 and the championship contest on March 17.
