Scouting Marcus Effner

A 2005 and 2007 NCAA qualifier, Effner is a hard worker on the mat and has the mental toughness and competitiveness to defeat anyone. He has the ability to win every scramble and to work out of tough situations.

2008-09 - Redshirt Season

Sat out the year due to a knee injury and was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA.

2007-08 - Junior Season

Finished the season with a team and career high 27 wins...earned a fifth place finish at EWL Tournament and received his second berth to the NCAA Championships...he earned his first NCAA Championship win against Bryon Sigmon of UNC-Greensboro...also tallied first place finishes at the Ashland and Nittany Lion Opens...won four of his six EWL matches.

2006-07 - Sophomore Season

Went 24-15, fourth-highest team win total...Placed third at EWL Championship after going 5-1 at 165, narrowly missing selection into the NCAA Tournament...Started slow but ended season "on fire", winning 6 of his final 8 matches...One of two Vikings to win matches against West Virginia in dual meet action, scoring a 6-4 decision over Eric Connolly (2/19)...Six pins were second-highest on team.

2005-06 - Redshirt Season

Gained redshirt status after suffering season-ending knee injury...finished with a 5-2 record... won first four matches of the season en route to a fourth place finish at the Slippery Rock Open...scored a fall in his last match of the season over Ohio State's Steve Sommer.

2004-05 - Freshman Season

Went 18-18 and was voted into the NCAA championships as a wild card after finishing fifth at the EWL Championship at 157 pounds...named EWL Wrestler of the Week after going 3-0 at the Wendy's Duals at Ashland...finished first at the Kent State Open after going 4-0.

High School

Went 42-3 en route to a state championship at 145 for Garfield Heights under coach Mike Arnold...finished eighth at high school nationals and was ranked 10th nationally in his weight class...career record of 122-33...placed sixth in the state as a junior...four-year letter winner...Plain Dealer Best of the Best award winner...first team all-conference.

Born Jan. 30, 1986 in Terre Haute, Ind....son of Lori and former CSU head wrestling coach Jack Effner...is the second member of the Effner family to wrestle for his father...has an older brother, Jason, and a younger sister, Kayla...criminal justice major.
