No. 24 Navy Tops Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio – An undermanned Cleveland State University wrestling team was no match for nationally ranked Navy as the host Midshipmen cruised to a 37-0 victory in dual action Saturday evening inside Alumni Hall.

Utilizing a lineup that was missing four of the starters from the season opener two weeks ago, CSU was unable to find a victory against a Navy program that boasts five top-25 wrestlers.

CSU and Navy also contested 16 'extra matches' with redshirt junior Cody Moosman winning a pair of additional fixtures.

Cleveland State was competitive in a number of the dual matches, dropping six bouts by three points or fewer, but could not put together a winning combination in any of them.

True freshman Jake Manley had the lone takedown of the opening period at 125 pounds, but his offense stalled over the final two frames.

Fellow rookie Daniel Patten nearly pulled off an impressive comeback at 157 pounds. Trailing, 3-0, after two periods, Patten registered two takedowns in the final period to level the bout, but his opponent was awarded the victory due to a technical violation.

For the second straight week, redshirt freshman Anthony Rice was involved in a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair at 174 pounds. Trailing, 7-5, after two periods, Rice used a takedown and two back points to retake the lead in the final period. However, with the score later tied, 10-10, his opponent was able to net the final takedown of the bout to claim the win.

Sophomore DeAndre Nassar posted the only takedown of regulation in his bout at 184 pounds, but it nevertheless went into overtime. Navy was able to post a takedown in the final seconds of the sudden-victory period to claim the win.

The heavyweight bout followed a similar script to some of the close CSU losses before it, as Navy broke a tie with a takedown in the final 15 seconds of regulation to come away with a one-point victory.

Moosman provided a bright spot for the Vikings with his efforts in the 'extra matches.' He posted a 4-0 victory at 125 pounds and also bumped up a weight class and still registered a second-period pin over his opponent. Manley gave CSU's 125-pound group another bonus-point win in the extra matches with a major decision victory in his second bout of the day at 125 pounds.

True freshman Daniel Bucknavich had a solid day at heavyweight. After posting a comfortable, 9-3, win in his opening bout, he dropped a two-point decision to Navy's starter at 285 pounds.

Redshirt sophomore Marcus Robinson claimed a 4-2 win in the second sudden-victory period in his second bout of the day at 149 pounds.

Cleveland State will return home next weekend as it welcomes fellow Mid-American Conference foe Central Michigan Friday, Feb. 5.
