Cleveland State Heads to Ohio Intercollegiate Open Sunday

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling team will not have to travel far for this weekend's event as the Vikings are set to take part in the Ohio Intercollegiate Open.

The Ohio Intercollegiate Open, hosted by Case Western Reserve, is set for this Sunday, Nov. 10, at 9:00 a.m. Finals bouts are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. It is the second in a stretch of three consecutive bracket-style events to close the month of November for the Vikings. Live results of Sunday's action will be available through TrackWrestling.

This is the fourth year that the tournament has been held, but it will be the first time the Vikings have sent their team since the inaugural event in 2016. In that 2016 tournament, three Vikings won titles, two of which came in the Freshman/Sophomore Division.

Cleveland State had a successful start to the season this past weekend as the Vikings went 2-0 at the Cleveland Clash dual event before seeing five Vikings place among the top four at the Clarion Open.

Redshirt senior Evan Cheek won the 141-pound title at the Clarion Open as he posted four bonus-point wins in his first competition in a Viking singlet since the 2018 NCAA Championships.

Redshirt sophomore Brady Barnett (157 pounds), sophomore Ben Smith (197) and redshirt freshman Riley Smucker (165) each placed third in his weight class at the event while redshirt senior Justin Patrick took fourth at 133 pounds after taking a medical forfeit in the third-place bout.

Barnett and Patrick tied for the team lead in wins after the opening weekend as each claimed a half dozen. Barnett went 1-0 in the Cleveland Clash before notching a team-best five wins at Clarion while Patrick won twice in the dual event and added four more in the open event.

Cleveland State will resume action Nov. 22 at the Navy Classic in its final event of the season's first month.
