Vaughn Places at Navy Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior John Vaughn placed at 165 pounds to lead the Cleveland State University wrestling team at the Navy Classic Saturday inside Wesley Brown Field House.

Vaughn placed sixth in the competition as CSU took part in the event for the first time in four years. He was one of six Vikings to win multiple matches on the day.

After earning a bye in the opening round, Vaughn opened up a 7-0 lead after one period in his first match, using four near-fall points. He went on to cruise to a 13-2 major win to advance into the quarterfinals. Vaughn trailed by just one point after two periods in his quarterfinal match but would drop a three-point decision.

Vaughn came back with a vengeance in his first consolation bout. He was in a tight match late but used a reversal in the final 10 seconds and then went on to pin his opponent with just five seconds left in regulation.

In his next bout against an opponent from Kent State, Vaughn used a takedown in the final minute to tie the match and force sudden victory, where he would net a winning takedown with under 20 seconds left in the period. His run then came to an end against a Big Ten opponent.

Redshirt sophomore Nico O'Dor and redshirt senior Armando Torres won three matches each at 157 pounds and 133 pounds, respectively.

O'Dor opened the event in style. He netted a takedown against his foe from Kent State 20 seconds into his bout and went on to collect a first-period pin. O'Dor led for the duration of his next bout once he grabbed the lead fewer than 90 seconds in. He used a point of riding time to claim a 9-3 win over an opponent from conference foe Edinboro.

O'Dor trailed by just a single point with a minute left in his quarterfinal match but could not rally to victory. He bounced back by tallying a takedown with under 40 seconds left to break a 1-1 tie in his first consolation bout and held on for the win. O'Dor's day came to an end with a heartbreaking, 11-minute setback.

Torres used a big third period in his opening match against a Pac-12 opponent to claim victory. He outscored his opponent 6-0 in the final period and went on to claim a major decision. He followed that up with another bonus point win, claiming a first-period pin. He went on to drop a two-point decision in the quarterfinals. Torres would add a third win to his ledger in the consolation rounds by defeating a conference opponent.

Redshirt freshman Chase Archangelo (157), true freshman Ben Smith (197) and junior Collin Kelly (285) each netted a pair of wins on the day.

Kelly never trailed in his opening match after netting a takedown just over 30 seconds in. He went on to earn an 11-5 win after getting a point for riding time. He then claimed a first-period pin to advance to the quarterfinals.

Kelly had a one-point lead in his quarterfinal bout after two periods but went on to lose in a sudden-victory session.

Archangelo and Smith both showed an ability to win tight matches as the former had a pair of one-point wins while the latter won by a point and won in sudden victory.

Redshirt sophomore Cameron Lathem (125), senior Sam Matzek (149) and redshirt junior Grant Turnmire (149) each ådded a win on the day. Turnmire posted a first-period pin over a Big Ten foe.

Cleveland State will resume action on the first weekend of December at the Cougar Clash, hosted by SIUE.
