Vikings Close Regular Season by Hosting Edinboro

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling team closes the 2017-18 regular season this weekend with a single dual match as the Vikings host defending Eastern Wrestling League champion Edinboro.

The Vikings and Fighting Scots will begin their dual at 1:00 p.m.

Cleveland State has been out of action since the first weekend in February although a limited number of Vikings took part in a pair of opens last weekend. CSU dropped road matchups at Bloomsburg and nationally ranked Lock Haven last time out.

Sophomore Evan Cheek won in both of those duals, including taking down a top 25 opponent from LHU, and was subsequently named EWL Wrestler of the Week. Cheek went on to post a 3-0 record against Division I opponents at the Warriors Winter Open last weekend, winning via fall, technical fall and decision.

Cheek now owns 16 wins since the turn of the calendar year, including 11 bonus-point wins. He was ranked 27th in the initial RPI listing at 141 pounds, which came prior to his three most recent wins.

Redshirt senior Nick Corba owns a team-leading 22 wins, all at 184 pounds, on the season. He owns 12 bonus-point wins, including seven pins, and was ranked 17th in the initial RPI rankings.

True freshman John Kelbly won his first EWL match in the dual at Bloomsburg, giving him double digit wins on the season.

Edinboro holds a 27-5 lead in the all-time series with CSU. The Fighting Scots are 7-5 this season, with three of their losses coming to teams currently ranked in the top 10. Edinboro is coming off a win over West Virginia Thursday evening and is 4-1 in EWL dual action this season. Redshirt junior Sean Russell (125) and redshirt sophomore Korbin Myers (133) both own 23+ wins this season and were ranked among the top 10 in the initial RPI rankings.

Cleveland State will make a return visit to Edinboro in two weeks to contest the EWL Championships Saturday, March 3.
