Cheek, Morrow Post Runner-Up Finishes in Open Action

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Junior Evan Cheek and sophomore Chris Morrow both posted runner-up finishes in opens as a handful of Cleveland State University wrestlers competed Sunday.

Four Vikings, including Cheek, took part in the Warriors Winter Open at East Stroudsburg's Koehler Fieldhouse while three Vikings, including Morrow, competed at the JCU Open at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

Cheek began his day with a pair of convincing victories at 141 pounds. He took down a Big Ten opponent in his opener by opening up a 10-0 lead after a single period. He scored six more points in the second, including his third near-fall sequence, to finish the technical fall shutout. Cheek had taken an 8-1 lead over an Eastern Wrestling League opponent competing unattached in his second bout. He then finished the win via fall in the first period to reach the semifinals.

In his semifinal bout, again against an EWL unattached opponent, Cheek took a two-point lead after the first period. He led by three points after two periods and won, 5-1, after earning a point for riding time. Cheek did not contest the championship match, as he lost via medical forfeit.

Junior Sam Matzek also reached the semifinals at the Warriors Winter Open at 141. Matzek had opened up an 8-0 lead in his opening match before pinning his opponent in the second period. He then took down a Big Ten opponent in the quarterfinals as he led start to finish in claiming a 6-3 win.

Matzek took leads in each of his next two matches, including a 6-0 lead over a fellow Division I opponent competing unattached, but was unable to claim victories.

Redshirt freshman Colton Carroll also won two matches at 174 at the same event. He took a 3-1 lead in his opening bout but ended up dropping the match. Carroll then opened up a 13-1 lead over his opponent from Penn in his first consolation bout before pinning his foe in the second period. Carroll pinned his next opponent in the first period before his consolation run came to an end.

Competing at the JCU Open, Morrow dominated en route to the final at 184 pounds. He used a pair of major decision shutouts to reach the championship bout, outscoring his first two opponents, 20-0. Morrow would lose the championship match via decision.

Redshirt freshman Cameron Lathem also won a match at the JCU Open at 125 pounds.

Cheek now owns 16 wins since the turn of the calendar year, including 11 bonus-point wins. He is 16-6 against Division I foes at 141 pounds.

Cleveland State will close the regular season this coming Saturday, Feb. 17, when it hosts Edinboro.
