Cheek Posts Key Win in CSU’s Loss at Ranked Foe

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Junior Evan Cheek posted a key win, but the Cleveland State University wrestling team dropped a 31-6 dual at nationally ranked Lock Haven in Eastern Wrestling League action Saturday afternoon inside Thomas Fieldhouse.

Cheek claimed a win over LHU's Kyle Shoop, who was among the top 25 in the initial NCAA Coaches' rankings and had entered Saturday with 27 wins on the season. Cheek is now 14-6 at 141 pounds this season and has won each of his past four EWL matches.

Lock Haven opened up an 8-0 lead on the team scoreboard after the matches at 125 and 133 pounds.

Cheek then took a 4-2 lead over Shoop at the end of the first period and extended that advantage to five points (8-3) after five minutes. Cheek held on to claim an 11-7 win.

A top-20 wrestler at 149 pounds got LHU five more points before junior John Vaughn stepped in for CSU at 157 pounds.

Vaughn had a two-point lead after the opening period, a three point lead after two periods and really pulled away in the final stanza. He ended up one point shy of a major, as he settled for a 9-2 win over an opponent who entered the day with a 14-9 record.

Lock Haven used a pin by a top-5 wrestler at 165 pounds to reestablish momentum, and they held it for the rest of the dual.

LHU won the next three matches by only a combined eight points. Redshirt senior Nick Corba had a lead after two periods at 184 pounds and true freshman John Kelbly was tied, 2-2, after two periods at 197, but neither one could claim a win. Corba's loss marked the first time he allowed points in an EWL dual this season.

Lock Haven ended the dual with a win via decision at heavyweight.

Vaughn's win was his second EWL victory of the season and his 13th of the season overall.

A trio of Vikings took part in the Edinboro Open Saturday. Redshirt sophomore Caleb Stockmaster won a pair of matches at 174 pounds, including collecting a win over a Big Ten foe.

Cleveland State will conclude dual action Saturday, Feb. 17, with a home matchup against nationally ranked Edinboro.
