BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Cleveland State University wrestling team came up short at host Bloomsburg Friday evening, 23-15, in Eastern Wrestling League action in Nelson Field House.

Four Vikings notched wins Friday, including junior Evan Cheek winning by fall.

Redshirt freshman Ryan Ford got the Vikings started off on the right foot at 149 pounds. He came out two points ahead after a high-scoring first period that saw 14 total points scored. Ford maintained that two-point advantage after five more minutes and claimed a 12-10 win.

After dropping a match via decision at 157 pounds, the Vikings looked poised to retake the lead, holding a three-point edge after two periods at 165. However, the hosts rallied to claim the victory.

Redshirt senior Gabe Stark rallied from a deficit after two periods to force a sudden-victory session at 174 pounds. However, he came up short in the extra frame, dropping the bout via decision.

Redshirt senior Nick Corba has yet to allow a point in EWL action, and that trend continued Friday. Corba posted a 2-0 win over Trevor Allard at 184, who had entered with a 22-8 record on the campaign.

True freshman John Kelbly then notched his first-career EWL win with a 5-3 decision at 197, pulling the Vikings within three points on the team scoreboard.

However, that was a close as CSU would get. The hosts won the following three matches to clinch the team victory.

Cheek ended the night with a bright spot for the Vikings, opening up a 12-2 lead after the first period before winning by fall within 30 seconds of the start of the second period.

Cheek, who won his third straight EWL match, is now 13-6 at 141 pounds with 10 bonus-point wins, including four pins.

Corba now owns a team-leading 22 wins this season and is 9-1 in dual action.

Kelbly's first EWL win moved his season win total into double digits in his rookie campaign.

Cleveland State will be right back in action as it has its EWL road finale Saturday at nationally ranked Lock Haven.
