Vikings to Split Time at Home, on Road This Weekend

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling team continues Eastern Wrestling League action on the final weekend of January and will split its time at home and on the road.

CSU will begin the weekend by hosting George Mason Saturday, Jan. 27, at Noon. The Vikings will then open a three dual road trip by heading to Clarion Sunday, Jan. 28, at 2:00 p.m. An audio-only broadcast of the dual at Clarion will be available by clicking here.

Saturday's match will represent Senior Day for the Viking program, as it honors its trio of seniors prior to the dual. This will be the first of back-to-back weekends in which CSU contests conference duals on consecutive days.

Cleveland State opened EWL action last time out by dropping a 30-6 dual to No. 19 Rider last weekend. The Vikings lost seven matches via decision to the Broncs, including two by a single point and another two by a trio of points.

Redshirt senior Nick Corba owns a team-leading 19 wins at 184 pounds. He owns six wins via fall, three by technical fall and two by major decision on the season. With one more win this season, Corba will have hit the 20-win mark for the third consecutive season.

Redshirt senior Gabe Stark and redshirt sophomore Caleb Stockmaster have both hit double digit wins at 174 pounds while junior Evan Cheek owns 13 wins on the season, including posting a 10-6 mark since moving up to 141 pounds.

Cleveland State owns a 3-2 all-time mark against George Mason with all five prior meetings occurring in the past six years. The Vikings are 2-2 against the Patriots in Virginia and won the only meeting to date in Cleveland in the 2015-16 season. In that match in Cleveland, the Vikings won the last two matches to turn a two-point team deficit into a five-point victory. George Mason won last year's dual as it won five matches by three points or fewer.

Stark posted a major decision win in the 2016 meeting while Corba won via major decision in last year's meeting with the Patriots.

George Mason owns a 3-8 mark on the season and will be contesting its fifth EWL dual when it faces the Vikings. Rider is the only common opponent between CSU and the Patriots while George Mason finished one spot behind CSU when competing at the Southern Scuffle. Redshirt senior Ibrahim Bunduka and redshirt senior Matthew Voss are tied for the team lead with 16 wins each and sit at opposite ends of the weight classes.

Clarion has a 28-16 advantage all-time against the Vikings. The Golden Eagles won last year's meeting, but CSU had taken the two previous matchups, including winning the last time the teams met in Pennsylvania.

Cheek and Corba won for Cleveland State in last year's setback to Clarion. Redshirt senior John Martin and junior John Vaughn both won bouts in the 2015-16 dual as CSU won the first four matches en route to a 23-12 win.

Clarion has won five straight duals to improve to 6-3 overall and took down George Mason in its EWL opener last weekend. The Golden Eagles placed second at the PSAC Championships in December, finishing ahead of Edinboro. Redshirt junior Brock Zacherl owns a 21-0 record on the season at 141 pounds and is ranked sixth nationally by Intermat.

Cleveland State will once again have two EWL duals next weekend, but both of those contests will take place on the road.
