CLEVELAND, Ohio - Junior Evan Cheek dominated three Big Ten opponents en route to the 141-pound title at the Purple Raider Open on a highly successful day for the Cleveland State University wrestling team Sunday inside the Peterson Field House.

CSU sent a limited number of student-athletes to the event, but that did not stop it from racking up victories as Vikings combined for a 17-8 record Sunday. Five of the six Vikings to compete placed at the open while four Vikings that took part knocked off Big Ten foes.

Cheek continued his strong start to the 2018 calendar year by laying waste to all who came across his path Sunday. After winning five matches while placing at the prestigious Southern Scuffle, Cheek went 4-0 Sunday, winning three matches via pin and another via technical fall. Three of his four wins came against opponents from the top three teams in the national rankings.

Cheek began his day by opening up an 11-2 lead over his opponent from Ohio State, including collecting four near-fall points. He would finish the match via pin in the second period. Cheek had a 5-0 lead early in the second period in the second round before posting his second straight second-period pin.

In the semifinals against his opponent from Michigan, Cheek opened up a 12-0 lead in the first period by collecting 10 near-fall points. He would maintain the shutout while finishing off the technical fall. In the championship match, Cheek again faced an opponent from Michigan. It would prove to be Cheek's shortest match of the event, as he won the title by posting a pin within the opening minute.

Junior John Vaughn and true freshman Georgio Poullas placed second at 157 pounds and 165 pounds, respectively.

Vaughn fell behind, 2-1, early in the third period of his opening match, but he scored a trio of points in the third frame to claim a 4-3 win. Vaughn took a 9-2 lead after the first period in his quarterfinal match over a Mid-American Conference opponent. He finished off the major decision win by collecting over two minutes of riding time. Vaughn won his semifinal match over a Division I opponent competing unattached via a shutout technical fall. He held a two-point lead after two periods in the championship match against his opponent from Michigan but ended up dropping the bout by one point.

Poullas began his run with a big comeback against his Ohio State opponent. Trailing, 5-1, in the second period, Poullas outscored his opponent, 6-1, the rest of the way to claim a thrilling, one-point win. Tied, 2-2, in the second period in his semifinal match, Poullas scored the final six points over his MAC foe to claim the win, including netting nearly three minutes of riding time. In the championship match, Poullas fell to his opponent from Ohio State.

Redshirt freshman Colton Carroll placed fourth at 174 pounds. In his first match, Carroll picked up a 15-9 win in which he collected over two minutes of riding time. In each of his next two matches, Carroll impressively won via first-period fall. In his semifinal match against his Ohio State opponent, Carroll was tied, 5-5, in the third period but ended up dropping his bout via decision.

Redshirt sophomore Grant Turnmire placed sixth at 149 pounds Sunday. He won his first match via pin in under a minute. After losing a two-point decision in the quarterfinals, Turnmire won his next two matches with bonus points. Facing a Big Ten foe in his first consolation match, Turnmire posted a shutout major decision in which he racked up over 6:30 of riding time. He won his next bout via major decision while collecting over five minutes of riding time before losing via three points in his next bout.

Redshirt sophomore Andrew Coghill won his opening bout at 133 pounds by pinning his Big Ten opponent in under 90 seconds.

No team scores were kept at the event.

Cleveland State will open its Eastern Wrestling League slate this Friday, Jan. 19, when it hosts Rider at 6:00 p.m.
