Vikings Open Home Slate With Familiar Foes

CLEVELAND, Ohio – After competing on the road for its first four dates of competition, the Cleveland State University wrestling team will open its home slate with duals on back-to-back days this weekend.

CSU will face a pair of familiar foes as it welcomes Eastern Michigan Friday, Dec. 8, at 7:00 p.m. and hosts John Carroll Saturday, Dec. 9, at 2:00 p.m.

The Vikings went 1-2 in dual action last time out at the Hoosier Duals. CSU picked up a comfortable win over Northern Illinois, avenging a loss from the season prior, and suffered a one-point setback to SIU Edwardsville along with a loss to the host Hoosiers.

True freshman John Kelbly posted a pair of bonus-point wins at the Hoosier Duals, including a pin over his NIU opponent, to collect his fifth and sixth wins of the season at 197 pounds. Redshirt senior Nick Corba (184) and redshirt freshman Ryan Ford (149) also both won two matches for CSU last Saturday.

Corba continues to pace Cleveland State with his 12-3 record on the season while owning five bonus-point wins. Redshirt senior Gabe Stark (174) and junior John Vaughn (165) are both within reach of hitting the double-digit win mark for the season this weekend.

The Vikings are 11-12 all-time against Eastern Michigan with Friday marking the 13th consecutive season the programs have faced one another in dual action. Additionally, the Vikings attended the EMU Open earlier this season while the Eagles will return to Cleveland next weekend for the Cleveland State Open. Corba picked up a pin in a dual at EMU last season while Stark tallied a win over the Eagles in the 2014-15 campaign.

Cleveland State will be facing John Carroll in a dual meet for the 34th consecutive season when the teams take the mat. CSU is 41-4-2 all-time against the Blue Streaks in a series that dates back to 1964-65. The Vikings have won 18 consecutive matches against John Carroll, including a 31-9 win last season. CSU's dual against John Carroll was its first of the season in each of the past three years. The teams had met in November in every season since 1992-93. Junior Evan Cheek, Corba, sophomore Devon Pingel, redshirt sophomore Grant Turnmire and Vaughn are among the Vikings that took home wins against JCU last season.

Eastern Michigan is an even 3-3 on the season in dual matchups. The Eagles competed at the Cliff Keen Tournament last weekend where heavyweight Gage Hutchison reached the quarterfinals. He owns a team-best nine wins while Derek Hillman (197) owns a team-high four dual wins.

John Carroll owns a 5-1 dual mark entering this weekend and will travel to Heidelberg for a dual Friday evening before facing the Vikings. Freshman Jarrod Brezovec owns a 12-0 record at 141 pounds entering the weekend and is one of four Blue Streaks with double digit wins.

Cleveland State will close the calendar year next weekend when it hosts its annual Cleveland State Open Saturday, Dec. 16.
