PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Redshirt sophomore Caleb Stockmaster of the Cleveland State University wrestling team won the 174-pound title at the Storm Open Sunday inside the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic and Wellness Center.
Stockmaster was one of four Vikings to compete at the event. He won all five of his matches, posting a couple of convincing wins while also showing an ability to win tight bouts.
Stockmaster began his day with a 5-4 win over an opponent from Kent State. He then took down Bryan Zehe with a third-period pin to reach the quarterfinals. Zehe would not lose again on the day, as he picked up three bonus-point wins following the loss.
Stockmaster then scored often in claiming a 20-7 major over a foe competing unattached from a Big Ten program. He continued his run with an 11-10 win over an opponent from American University.
Stockmaster faced Cody Hughes of Virginia Tech in the finals. Hughes, who went 30-8 competing unattached last year, had won each of his matches by at least six points entering the final. However, Stockmaster turned the tables and picked up an 11-7 win over his Atlantic Coast Conference opponent to win the title.
Redshirt freshman Colton Carroll also reached the quarterfinals at 174 pounds, as he garnered a 7-5 win in the round of 16. Redshirt sophomore Grant Turnmire picked up an opening-round win at 149 pounds for CSU with a 3-1 victory.
Cleveland State will open its home slate with a pair of duals this weekend, beginning Friday, Dec. 8, when it hosts Eastern Michigan at 7:00 p.m.
