Marcelli and Ryan Sign NLI’s to Join Vikings

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling coaching staff announced that two student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent (NLI's) to continue their careers with the Vikings.

Victor Marcelli (Massillon, Ohio / Jackson) and Hunter Ryan (Jefferson, Ohio / Lake Catholic) both signed NLI's during the recent early signing period to commit to CSU for the 2018-19 academic year.

Despite having not competed for the majority of his junior season due to injury, Marcelli showed what he was capable of when the postseason arrived. He won the Perry sectional and Hoover district titles, posting four combined wins via pin, to reach the state tournament for the third straight season. He won a pair of matches to reach the semifinals at 182 pounds, before losing in an ultimate tiebreaker format, to place at the event for the second time.

Marcelli placed third at the Ohio state tournament as a sophomore at 170 pounds, finishing his season with a 42-6 record. He went 4-1 at the state event with his only loss coming by a single point. He had previously become the first Jackson freshman to qualify for the state tournament in 2015. He won the Perry sectional at 152 pounds en route to the state tournament where he came one win short of placing at the event. He notched 36 wins in his rookie high school season.

Marcelli doubled up on Greco and freestyle All-America honors in 2015 in the cadet ranks and again this past summer at the junior nationals. He became the first wrestler in Stark County history to achieve All-America honors in both formats at the same event. He was seventh at 182 pounds at the Junior Freestyle Nationals this past summer and was fifth in the Greco-Roman discipline. Marcelli is ranked nationally by multiple outlets at his weight class, including as high as fifth by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (WIN).

"Vic Marcelli is probably the most accomplished freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestler coming out of high school in the history of CSU wrestling's recruiting," assistant coach Josh Moore said. "He has competed in multiple national tournaments and has excelled in all of them. We are excited to add him to an already young and accomplished group of freshmen who signed within this past year. Vic will fill in nicely at 184, where senior NCAA qualifier Nick Corba will graduate this spring."

Ryan advanced the Ohio state tournament for the third consecutive season in 2017. He won four matches at the event to place fourth at 120 pounds. He won a trio of matches at the 2016 state tournament to place sixth at 113 pounds. As a freshman, Ryan qualified for the state tournament at 106 pounds and finished one win shy of placing at the event.

Ryan, who has earned multiple All-North Coast League and all-county honors, has won at least 30 matches in each of his first three high school seasons. He has won the Lake Catholic sectional tournament three years running with all of his career wins at the event being of the bonus-point variety. Ryan was named an OhioVarsity First Team All-Star last year and enters his final season with Lake Catholic with 97 interscholastic wins.

"Hunter is a great addition to our program and will add depth and competition to our lightweights right away," Moore said. "He has been successful over the past few years while placing at the state tournament and we expect him to have another great showing this season and finish high on the podium! He projects at 125 pounds for us."

Cleveland State will resume action on the first weekend of December at Indiana's Hoosier Duals.
