BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Redshirt junior Nick Corba and sophomore Evan Cheek finished second and third, respectively, as the Cleveland State University wresting team competed at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships Saturday inside Bloomsburg's Nelson Field House.

Cleveland State finished sixth as a team with 21 points. Seven of the 10 Vikings were competing at the EWL Championships for the first time in their careers.

Corba was second at 184 while Cheek took third at 141. Sophomore John Vaughn also placed for the Vikings, finishing fourth at 165 pounds.

Corba advanced to the final by allowing only a single point in his opening two matches. He won his opener, 4-0, and upset his foe from Rider in the semifinals by a 4-1 margin. Competing in a EWL title contest for the first time, Corba took an early lead with a takedown. His opponent from Edinboro was able to tie the match, and it remained knotted, 3-3, after two periods. Corba was unable to score in the final period and dropped a 6-3 decision. Corba now owns 23 wins on the season.

For the second straight season, Cheek went 3-1 at the EWL Championships to finish third. Cheek won his opening match via a technical fall shutout. He fell to the top seed in the semifinals by a 9-5 margin. The sophomore bounced back with two relatively convincing wins. He advanced to the third-place bout with an 8-2 win and ended his day with a major decision victory over an opponent from Rider. With his efforts, Cheek improved his team-leading win total to 27. He now owns a team-leading eight technical falls among his 17 bonus-point victories.

Vaughn dropped his opening match via decision, but he would not let that define his performance at his initial League Championship. He won his next match, 8-4, before pulling off an upset of an opponent from Lock Haven in the consolation semifinals. Vaughn took down Jared Siegrist with a 7-5 victory in the first sudden-victory session. In the third-place match, Vaughn was up against the same opponent to which he lost his opening match. He improved his performance from the opener but still fell one point short, dropping a 3-2 decision.

Redshirt junior John Martin and freshman Devon Pingel also won matches on the day at 125 and 174 pounds, respectively.

After dropping his opener to the second seed, Martin won his first consolation match in thrilling fashion, claiming a 12-10 win in the first sudden victory period. He would score 10 points in his next bout, but it would prove not to be enough against his foe from George Mason.

Pingel began the day by dropping his opening match to the top seed. However, he won his next match with a pin in under 90 seconds to continue his day. Pingel fell by decision in his final bout of the afternoon. His pin was his team-leading seventh of the season while it was also his 18th victory of the season, the most among Viking freshmen.

Redshirt freshman Ryan Montgomery had a pair of tight matches go against him Saturday, as he dropped his two bouts by a combined three points.

Cleveland State will now await word from the NCAA Wrestling Committee to see if any Vikings earn at-large berths into the NCAA Championships later this month. At-large selections will be announced Wednesday, March 8.
