Cleveland State Rallies to Edge Bloomsburg

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State University wrestling team rallied from an early 9-0 deficit to pick up a 26-23 back-and-forth victory over visiting Bloomsburg in Eastern Wrestling League action Friday evening inside Woodling Gymnasium.

"It's good to get our first win at home," head coach Ben Stehura said. "I thought Corba, Vaughn and Nick Montgomery wrestled really well. The other guys are making progress. I'm happy to win. I'm looking forward to getting some more matches this Sunday at Mat-Town."

Montgomery picked up a win by fall while Corba and Vaughn both posted major decision victories.

While the evening ended well for CSU, it was the Huskies that pulled ahead early.

Redshirt junior John Martin fell behind, 4-1, after two periods in the opening bout at 125 pounds. He posted a third-period takedown and seemed to have the potential to pull even or take the lead. However, he was unable to pick up any further points, as he fell via decision.

After the teams, exchanged six-points at the next two weight classes, Montgomery put the Vikings into the lead for the first time.

After getting an early takedown, Montgomery was on the verge of pinning his opponent for an extended stretch. The senior was able to secure the fall at 2:24 into the match to put CSU in front, in what was the first of five lead changes during the evening.

Bloomsburg returned the favor with a first-period pin at 157 pounds, but Vaughn put the hosts back in front at 165 pounds.

Vaughn posted takedowns in each of the first two periods to own a 4-1 lead after five minutes. The sophomore used an escape, two takedowns and earned a point for riding time to notch a 10-2 major decision win.

The Huskies used a 5-2 decision win at 174 pounds over true freshman Devon Pingel to take a one-point lead in the team score.

Corba then put quickly moved to put Cleveland State back in front. He notched a first-period takedown and earned four near fall points in the opening period. He would go on to continue his shutout throughout the match and won via major decision.

The outcome of the dual was put to bed when true freshman Collin Kelly picked up a win via forfeit at 197 pounds.

Sophomore Evan Cheek picked up his team-leading 18th win Friday. Montgomery's win by fall moved his record to 5-1 on the season in matches ending in pins. Corba moved his record to 14-6 on the season with 10 of his victories garnering bonus points.

Cleveland State will resume action this Sunday, Feb. 5, as it competes in Mat-Town Open II hosted by Lock Haven.
