Vikings Set to Host Huskies to Open February

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling team will open the final month of the regular season this Friday, Feb. 3, when it welcomes Bloomsburg.

CSU and the Huskies will commence the Eastern Wrestling League dual at 7:00 p.m. This is the second dual of a stretch that sees the Vikings contest five of their final six duals at home.

Cleveland State dropped its home-opening dual last time out against Lock Haven, an event that had to be postponed one day to transportation issues that arose on the Bald Eagles' journey to Cleveland.

Sophomore Evan Cheek (141) and redshirt junior Nick Corba (184) both notched bonus-point victories against Lock Haven to lead the CSU cause.

With his win, Cheek improved his team-leading win total and enters Friday with a 17-8 mark on the season. He has 13 bonus-point victories on the season and is 10-0 in bouts that end in either a fall or technical fall. Corba owns a 13-6 record on the campaign entering February and has compiled nine bonus-point victories.

Redshirt junior John Martin and sophomore John Vaughn both had tight decisions against the Bald Eagles but dropped their bouts by three points and one point, respectively.

Bloomsburg holds a 24-11-3 advantage in the all-time series between the teams that dates back to the late 1970s. However, the Vikings have claimed wins in each of the past two seasons in convincing fashion. CSU won via shutout, 41-0, in the last meeting between the teams in Ohio in 2015 while the Vikings posted a 35-6 win during their regular-season finale last year in Pennsylvania.

Five current Vikings own victories over Bloomsburg in a dual format, including three projected starters. Senior Nick Montgomery is 3-0 in his career against the Huskies in a dual format, owning two bonus-point victories. Corba and Martin also own wins against Bloomsburg in their careers.

Bloomsburg has primarily competed in dual meets this season and owns a 4-14 mark in such competitions. The Huskies also finished third of 16 teams at the Rose Bowl of Wrestling, the Wilkes Open, and were fourth of 12 teams at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships. Bloomsburg is seeking its first EWL win of the season, with their closest setback being a 24-18 loss to George Mason. Redshirt freshman Trevor Allard leads the team with 17 wins on the season, all of which have come at 174 pounds. He owns 10 wins in dual competitions. Freshman Kyle Murphy (184) and sophomore Matt Noble (133) follow with 15 and 13 wins, respectively.

Cleveland State will contest two EWL duals next weekend, beginning with a trip to nationally ranked Edinboro Friday, Feb. 10.
