Vikings Win Three Titles at Ohio Intercollegiate Open

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling team captured three titles while competing Sunday at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open, hosted by Case Western, inside Veale Field House.

Senior Nick Corba went unbeaten in five bouts to win the Open title at 184 while a pair of rookies had success in the freshman/sophomore portion of the competition.

Freshman Terrell Grant won the 133 freshman/sophomore title with a 4-0 mark while classmate Devon Pingel won all three of his matches to claim first place at 174.

Corba started his day with a victory via technical fall and followed with a 9-4 decision to advance into the quarterfinals. The veteran then posted a major decision win to reach the semifinals. Corba won each of his final two matches against foes from Kent State via decisions, including a 5-2 win in the championship, his closest match of the day.

Sophomore Evan Cheek took second place in the Open 141 competition and netted some convincing wins in the process. Cheek won his first match via fall and then defeated a Navy opponent with a technical fall. Cheek won by decision, 5-2, over Chance Driscoll in the semifinals before dropping a high-scoring final by decision, 14-10.

Redshirt senior RJ LaBeef and senior Nathan Wynkoop both placed sixth in the Open competition at 149 and 165, respectively.

After dropping his opening match of the day, LaBeef won four straight to bouts to reach the consolation final. He won his first consolation match via fall before winning decisions over wrestlers from Kent State and Ohio State. A technical fall win advanced then LaBeef into the consolation final.

Wynkoop posted a pair of wins on the day to place sixth.

Junior Andrew Coghill, sophomore Sam Matzek, sophomore Grant Turnmire and sophomore John Vaughn also won matches in the Open portion of the event Sunday.

Grant cruised to the title match at the 133 weight class in the freshman/sophomore competition. He won via technical fall in his opening match, claimed a seven-point decision in the quarterfinal and won by major decision in the semifinals. Grant then won a tight, 6-5, decision over Freddy Eckles in the championship bout.

Pingel's experience was similar to Grant as he cruised to the final before having a tough match. Pingel won by technical fall in his opening match and then was victorious via fall (1:12) in the semifinals. Pingel won the title with a sudden-victory, 7-5, win.

Freshman Spencer Dusi, fresh off a win by fall in CSU's opening dual, took second place at the 125 freshman/sophomore action. Dusi won three matches, including two more via fall, to reach the final.

No team scores were kept at the meet.

Cleveland State will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 22, with a tri-dual featuring host Kent State and nationally ranked Ohio State.
