Shaw and Willeford Finish Strong at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, TN - The Vikings competed at the second day of the 2015 Defense Soap & Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle Friday (Jan. 2) in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Riley Shaw finished in 5th place at 285 and Ben Willeford finished in 8th place at 125

Willeford knocked off former NCAA top 12 finisher Dominic Parisi of Appalachian State to earn his Southern Scuffle medal after falling 8-3 to Eddie Klimara of Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals.

Shaw knocked off Stanford's Nathan Butler to earn his first Southern Scuffle medal then followed it up with two more wins to ultimately finish in 5th place.  Included in those wins was a decision over EWL rival Jake Kettler of George Mason.

This marks the first time since 1991 that two CSU wrestlers have placed in one of the prestigious holiday classic tournaments (The Midlands or Southern Scuffle).  In 1991, Dan Carcelli and Jeff Scherma both placed for the Vikings at the Midlands.

Riley Shaw's fifth place medal is also the highest since Gerald Harris took 3rd in the 2002 Midlands

The other four Vikings (Dan King, Alfredo Gray, Mike Carlone, and Xavier Dye) lost in the first consolation round this morning.  They all finished with two wins in the tournament.  King and Dye were knocked out by eventual placewinners and Carlone lost in an overtime match.
