Cleveland State Men’s Tennis Opens Season At Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team opened up the 2022 spring campaign Saturday, dropping a 7-0 contest at Michigan State.

"We of course wanted to win this match today, but despite the outcome, we got to see the amount of fight that this team is going to have this year – and that's very encouraging," said head coach Brian Etzkin. "We were able to pick up a doubles court, and had three three-setters in singles which shows that the fight is there. We will take this as our first day of the season and look to improve on it tomorrow."

Despite dropping the doubles point, the Vikings were able to pick up a win at the top of the lineup, as Maxime Mareschal-Hay and Clark Bilinovich combined for a 7-5 victory over MSU's Graydon Lair and Jarreau Campbell.

In singles play, Cleveland State was able to push three courts to three-sets, as Mareschal-Hay (No. 1), Mikael Erler (No. 2) and Bilinovich (No. 4) all went the distance in their matches.

Erler, along with Hugo Chatras who played at No. 6 singles for the Vikings on Saturday, made their CSU dual match debut against Michigan State on Saturday, after joining the Vikings prior to the 2021-22 campaign.

Cleveland State will continue its first weekend of the 2022 spring campaign tomorrow (Sunday, January 23), traveling to Ball State for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
