Men’s Tennis Trio Closes Out Action At Oracle ITA Masters & Milwaukee Tennis Classic

The Cleveland State men's tennis trio of Nico Mostardi, Luke Phillips and Matthew Terry wrapped up action on the opening weekend of the 2018 fall campaign Saturday, Mostardi at the Oracle ITA Masters and Phillips and Terry at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

Oracle ITA Masters | Malibu, Calif.
Nico Mostardi bowed out of the Oracle ITA Masters Saturday, falling in a consolation quarterfinal matchup against Fresno State's Zdenek Derkas. Derkas entered the weekend as a top-20 seed and was a First Team All-Mountain West honoree last season.

Mostardi was able to pick up a convincing 6-2 victory during the first set, and then held the advantage during the majority of the second set before battling leg cramps which allowed Derkas to earn a 7-5 second set victory and let him back into the match. Despite not playing at full strength, Mostardi was able to stay in the match during the third set, before dropping a hard fought 6-3 final frame. Mostardi finished his time at the Oracle ITA Masters with a 1-2 singles mark.

From The Sideline
"Nico was definitely putting all of the pieces together today, and it's too bad that he wasn't able to finish the match at full strength. He did a tremendous job of battling through adversity in today's match, and he did a good job of putting up three solid matches against three tough opponents on the weekend. He will be able to use this tournament as a step forward for the season, and he is excited to get back at it next weekend." – head coach Brian Etzkin
