Men’s Tennis Opens Horizon League Play Against Green Bay

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Following a six-match roadswing, the Cleveland State men's tennis team will finally return to the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion this weekend, hosting Green Bay on Saturday, March 24 to begin Horizon League play.

Last Time Out…
The Vikings wrapped up their six-match roadswing with a trio of matches in the state of Florida during their annual Spring Break Trip, traveling to Miami, Barry and Palm Beach Atlantic. Cleveland State finished this stretch with a 2-4 record, and enters Horizon League play standing at 9-8 overall this spring.

The Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion
The Vikings will return to the friendly confines of the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion this weekend, looking to improve on their 7-1 record that they own at the MMTP this season. Cleveland State is calling the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion home for the third year, and stands at 13-8 all-time in matches played in the MMTP.

Vikings Tabbed Preseason Favorites In Horizon League
Earlier this season, Cleveland State was selected as the preseason favorite to win the Horizon League, collecting 46 points and four first place votes in the preseason poll. Over the last six years that the league has been releasing a preseason poll, this marked the first time that the Vikings were favored to win and the fifth time that Cleveland State was a top-two selection.

Over the last 15 seasons the Vikings have posted an overall record of 58-34 against Horizon League teams, including perfect regular season marks during the 2011, 2010 and 2009 campaigns. Cleveland State has won four regular season titles under head coach Brian Etzkin (2011, 2010, 2009, 2008) – the most from any current league school over the last 15 seasons. 

Radosevic & Terry Pick Up Weekly #HLMTEN Honors
After playing as a doubles team for the first time last week, Mirko Radosevic and Matthew Terry were named the Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week following their 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles against Palm Beach Atlantic. The win against the Sailfish gave Radosevic his 58th career doubles win, as he is now just one win shy of earning a spot in the top-10 on the CSU Doubles Wins List. 

Mostardi & Terry Record 20th Singles Wins Of The Season
After picking up a singles win last week, Nico Mostardi and Matthew Terry both eclipsed the 20-win mark for the season, Mostardi entering the weekend with a 20-6 overall record and Terry standing at 20-9. Mostardi picked up his 20th win against Barry on March, 13, becoming the fastest Viking all-time to reach the 20-win plateau, while Terry is the sixth Viking to reach the milestone as a freshman.

…Phillips Close Behind
Luke Phillips enters Horizon League play just one win shy of recording his 20th singles win for the season, as he currently stands at 19-10 during his freshman campaign. Phillips, who owns a 9-6 record this spring, has played throughout the top half of the singles lineup for the Vikings, owning his best record of 4-2 at the No. 2 spot.

Slade & Radosevic Closing In On CSU Singles Wins List
Entering the Horizon League slate, Benjamin Slade and Mirko Radosevic are closing in on earning a spot in the top-10 on the CSU Singles Wins List, as Radosevic has 54 career singles victories and Slade has 52. To earn a spot in the top-10, Radosevic needs four more wins, while Slade needs six more victories. Entering Saturday's match against Green Bay, Slade owns a team-best 10-5 singles record this spring.

Head Coach Brian Etzkin
Brian Etzkin is in his 16th year at the helm of the Vikings, owning a 226-167 dual match record. Etzkin has guided the Vikings to five Horizon League Tournament titles and five trips to the NCAA Tournament during his tenure. Last spring, Etzkin helped lead the Vikings to the Championship match of the Horizon League Tournament, making their eighth appearance in the title match.

Scouting The Phoenix
Green Bay enters Saturday's contest with a 6-7 record on the season, and has won two straight against UW-Whitewater and Gustavus Adolphus. Green Bay's top-three singles players of Florian Kraenzler, James Ling and Charlie Croxford have been the same throughout the entire spring slate, with Ling owning a team-best 9-3 singles record.

This will be the 24th meeting between the two teams under head coach Brian Etzkin, with Green Bay owning a slight 12-11 advantage in the overall series. Cleveland State was able to pick up a 4-3 victory against the Phoenix in the Horizon League Tournament last season, snapping a five-match winstreak for Green Bay in the series.
