Phillips Named #HLMTEN Singles Player Of The Week

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the fourth time out of the first five weeks of the Spring Season the Cleveland State men's tennis team has picked up Horizon League Singles Player of the Week honors, as freshman Luke Phillips was tabbed Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon.

"Luke was definitely challenged this weekend after moving up the singles lineup to play at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, but he rose to the challenge and had a great weekend. Week after week, Luke continues to improve his game in practice and does a great job of carrying that over into matches. He has been a major part of our success so far this season, and he is a great team guy that leaves everything on the court," head coach Brian Etzkin said.

Last weekend, Cleveland State posted a 2-1 record at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion, improving to 7-4 overall this season.

Phillips notched a perfect 3-0 singles record during the homestand, picking up a pair of wins at the No. 2 spot and his final win at the top of the singles lineup.

Throughout the season, Phillips has been playing in the top half of the singles lineup, and was forced to move into the top two spots for the first time of his collegiate career last weekend. In the first match of the weekend, Phillips posted a 6-3, 6-2 win against Butler, then followed that up with a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Bucknell and a 6-0, 6-2 win against John Carroll.

For the season, Phillips stands at 17-7 in singles play, and has won five straight matches entering this weekend's roadswing.

Phillips and the Vikings will continue their Spring Season this weekend, traveling to St. Bonaventure (Saturday, February 24) and Buffalo (Sunday, February 25) for a pair of matches.
